Wo are really glad that they stand but little chance, for the present, of political promotion, and have no desire to return to the United States BOT vice, even were the Yankees not too mean a people to permit it. The presence of men, who invariably, when commanding equal for?es, fairly whipped tho fight, and fre? quently did so when largely out-number? ed, would be unpleasant and distasteful to the loyal officer* of the army. And thb. South needs these men to build her railroads, to manage her banks and joint stock companies, to open ber mines and to educate her daughters and her sons. To take a single example, on Saturday last, we visited, with Gen. Alexander, the Cotton Seed Oil Cake Manufactory in Columbia. He has on band at least 1,000 tons of cotton seed. Ho showed us bono aced oil pressed out by bis ma? chinery, superior to any olive oil now sold, and expects to furnish it at $2 a gallon. He showed us three varieties of cotton seed oil and cotton seed oil cake of two kinds, one kind made by a newly patented chemical method, which ex? tracts the oil completely. But the most interesting statement of all we can make is this, that from every bushel of bis cotton, seed General Alexander's lint ma? chine i takes off three pounds of very good lint, before the seed is conveyed, by a revolving elevator, to the bulling apparatus.-Winnsboro News.
