It waa decided to commence this survey about 800 yards from thc mouth of the river. Subsequently, Captain Selfridge, accompanied by other officers and sixty-four' marines, started by tho way of Caledonia river to reach the head-waters .of the Savannah river, and returned on the 3d of 'March. They passed over Lieutenant Strain's route for A considerable diatanco, following the Caledonia river to the foot of the last rango of tho Cordilleras, dividing the Caribbean sea from the Pacific slope. They then crossed the mountains to the Western slope, had an interview with the Indian chiefs and returned. It was - a successful reoonnoissanoe, demonstrating that the Caledonia river has a.riso of only fifty feet to the mouu tain ?p?rs, and that between that point and tho plain of the Saoubita river, on ibo Puoific slope, there is only a dis? tance of one and a half miles of higher elevation. It is believed that the sur? veys'will prove that the water shed be? tween the Caledonia and Sacubita rivers is not more than 150 feet in elevation. Pack mules have been sent for to Car thagena. Surveyors are running a line to the lowest of the mountain passes, but work is slow, owing to the dense un? dergrowth. The members of the expe? dition are in good health. The Indians met with so far are friendly, but it is said that those on the Pacific slope are not. RODBTNO the PEOPLE.-It is reported of the Hop. A. P. Edgarton, of Indiana, that he said the other day : "When the war broke out, a good, loyed streak came over me, and I lent the Government $100,000 in gold. I have reoeived $300, 000 in gold from the Government, and still have 8100,000 due me !" This, says the New York Democrat, is a good item for the tax-payers. It has been claimed by Republican ed? itors and others for the past half dozen years, that those who lent money to the Federal Government to conduct the war made a great sacrifice, for which they should bo handsomely paid ; yet in the face of this comes this confession of a bondholder, that he has already received ?300,000 for $100,000 lent ; and if he holds on to his bonds a few years longer, he may double several times moro on the principal. There is nothing like being a bond? holder. The bonds are exempt from taxation ; the interest is payable in gold, and the income reoeived from the bonds is also free from tax. On that $300,000 which Mr. Edgarton has received from the Government, he has not paid one cent of tax to relievo the poor man from his burden. The Sandwich Islanders are about erecting a monument to Captain Cook. Nothing could ba more appropriate. Having eaten him, they, above all others, know how good a man he WUB.
