There was silence for a moment.
Everybody was thinking.

and suddenly recollecting himself, and
seeing Juliet's crimson face, Rudolph
ceased abruptly, bit his lip and turned to
the other window.

ing open the door quick as thought, he
was out on the pavement.
"Where are you going, Rudolph?" said
Mrs. Thurlow. "Come back here, this
instant. You have nearly frightened Ju?
liet into a swoon."
"My goodness, Juliet," and Rudolph
slopped a moment. "It is only one of
my school-fellows, whom I'm very anx?
ious too see. I was BO surprised. Please
don't detain me. Don't wait; I'll join
you at the hotel." So saying, Rodolph
disappeared among the orowd. Leaving
thc ladies to regain the Fifth Avenue
Hotel as best they may, we will follow
him.
Making speed as rapidly as the crowd
and the blockaded streets would permit,
Rudolph kept his eye fixed on two gen?
tlemen, who were sauntering leisurely
along some distance in front of him.
The tallest was in traveling guise. For
a little time, the gentlemen kept on
Broadway, but finally turned off on
Leonard street. Rudolph was now ena?
bled to get nearer-finally he found him?
self immediately in their rear. Tho tall
gentleman turned his head slightly, to
prevent the smoke of his oigar from
puffing into his companion's face. He
oaught a glimpse of Rudolph, regarded
him a moment with an expression of sur?
prise and inquiry, and then holding out
his band, saluted him.
"It must be Rudolph," he said, "but
you've grown immensely. How do you
do, my boy?"
It was Karl von Oppenheim.
"Thank you-I am very well," an?
swered Rudolph, shaking hands with his
uncle. He was introduced to the other
gentleman as Herr Koenig. A quiet,
gentlemanly looking man, with good ad?
dress and easy carriage. After closely
inspecting the said individua], Rudolph
remarked, in the Gorman language,
which they had been speaking when he
came up
"You are not my aunt Nannerl 's Herr
Koenig-are yon? If so, you have an
altered look, somehow."
"I am not the fort?nate individual you
mention," replied Herr Koenig, smiling;
"only a brother. But I consider myself
an ill-used man, that it is my brother and
not myself, who is the husband of such
a fioo woman and the unole of suoh a
promising young man."
After a desultory conversation chiefly on
family affairs, Herr Koenig shook hands
and bade them good-morning, saying he
would seo them again. The uncle and
nephew walked for some time in silence.
At length Rudolph's impatience broke
forth.
"Where on earth did you come from,
uncle Karl? and wvftit have you been
doing with yourself all this long time?
Why havo you not written to us? When
did you see father and mother? Did you .
bring mo no letter?"

I forgot," was Karl's sad reply; but,
changing his tone instantly, he proceed?
ed: "Well, Rudolph, I have been wan?
dering to and fro on the earth, residing
chiefly at Paris, trying to extract a little
sweetness from life. But I need not tell

"He has no wife," said Rudolph, "that
is, if you mean Frank Clayburn."
"Of course, I mean Frank Clayburn,"
said Karl. "He's the only man I know,
or care to know by the d-name, and
it were far better for me if ho had been
in purgatory some time ago."
"It is very unbecoming in you to talk
in this way," replied Rudolph, stoutly;
"you have injured yourself more than
Frank Clayburn ever injured yon."
"Have you turned against me, too?"
asked Karl, reproachfully. "This is
woree than the dagger of Brutus 1"
"Oh, nol indeed, my uncle, I love
you just the same, but I cannot say you
have acted right, when I don't think
so."
"I seo you have been kept in the
dark," said Karl, "but y JU will think
differently when I tell you all that has
transpired. But why don't they marry?
I presume they are still engaged, or has
there been a smash-up there, too-she
must be fond of the thing." Karl's tone
was more than slightly contemptuous.
