IMPORTANT DECISION -THE POWKK OF THE CITY TO IMPRISON.-Tho arbitrary exercise of power so much in vogue at the Guard House, hos often been ques? tioned, but thc question has never been tested until yesterday, when a man who had been tined for au offence against a city ordinance, aud who refused to pay the fine, was brought before Judge Car? penter on a habeas corpus. The Judgo decided that thc city had a right to en? force its ordinances and inflict fines, but that iu caso the party fined refused to pay it, ho could not be held in du? rance until he paid. The proper remedy for the city was to sue for the ponalty in the Recorder's Court. The habeas corp us was granted and the party released. [Charleston Courier. On last Sunday afternoon, says tho Augusta Chronicle and Sentinel, a squad of drunken negroes created a very large sized bobbery in tho ancient and African? ized town of Hamburg. Mr. George F. Moldau, long known to the business community of Charleston, died suddenly yesterday afternoon. Mr. M. had been in feeble health for some time, but was able to be about, and was seen on tho streets the day before his death. A man named John Phillips committed suicide in Baltimore, recently, by shoot? ing away his head with a horse pistol. His nose and tongue were blown against the oeiling, whero they stuck.
