A great num? ber of arrests were made last night and to-day. It is stated the editors of the Marseillaise and two editors of the Reveille were arrested on charges connected with the conspiracy. A policemau in plain clothes was shot and killed yesterday, by a mechanic, whom he was endeavor? ing to arrest in his own house. Tho man was taken into custody. -The Marseillaise re-appeared to-day, and was eagerly bought on the streets. Several oitizens were killed during the recent riots, and their bodies have been ?laced in the morgue, but the police re? use to give any details concerniug them. ---. ? . Wanltlnaton We wi. The Ways and Means Committee con? sidered the extending of the whiskey bonds to three years; also a memorial of the Chamber of Commerce of New Orleans, presented by General Sypher, against a change of the sugar tariff. In the House, the memorial of the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, regard? ing the sugar tariff, was presented by Schecck, and referred back to the com? mittee. Various disability bills were presented, upon which the yeas and nays were called. A resolution that Washing? ton and Georgetown should support their paupers without Federal aid, wus discussed. In the House, a resolution was intro? duced declaring that the business in? terests of the country requires an in? crease in the volume of currency, and instructing the Committee on Banking and Currency to report as soon as possi? ble a bill increasing the currency at leas) $50,000,000. A motion to table thu failed by a vote of 93 to T3. It comee up on Monday next. Logan spoke in favor of the recogni? tion of .the belligerency of Cuba. A resolution was adopted requesting the President to inform the House whethei an order had been given to clear the docks at New York for the purpose o! repairing the Spanish war vessels, and il so, by what authority. The appropria tion bill was resumed, when the Hons? adjourned. Tho Judiciary Committee report?e favorably on Strong and Bradly by out majority. No actiou. The plan of try ing the contested election cases by draw ing a committee or jury from the II oust was defeated on the motion to suspenc the rules-vote 78 yeas; 104 nays. In the Senate, the President trans mitted a report of the Secretary of War regarding Georgia. In the Senate, a communication fron the Secretary of War, upon affairs ii Georgia, with the credentials of the Se nators elect, Hill and Miller, were refer red to the Judiciary Committee. The Secretary of the Treasury wa directed to report whether the publi interest would not be subserved by re moving the branch of the mint fron New Orleans to New York. A bill was introduced to enforce th fifteenth amendment by granting sui frage at State and County elections, an punishing refusal or neglect to asses and collect a tax where its payments is qualification of an elector.
