THE WAX THE MONEY GOBS. -From all Santa, Washington ia a gay place thia er. What with balla, dinners, luncb m w?st hot, the extravagance and display in drees and equipage were never before equaled. The President and his Cabinet and certain Senators are living in a style of imperial luxury which the paltry salaries they receive do not begin t? warrant. There is no difficulty in as? certaining where the money comes from to support all of this magnificence. The President's salary would not pay his wife's millinery and confectionery bills. The carriages and horses in the stables of the White House could not be bought tor his year's salary. The insignificant pay of the different Secretaries is not equal to their mode of life. The same may bo said of most of the office-holding gentry. They are all living beyond their legitimate incomes, and sober folks can? not but think that the over-taxed people axe paying, through tho taxes, for the music, oysters, boned turkeys, salads, sweet-meats, wines, and flowers required every night in the "upper circles" of the oapital. AU is not "lovely" when a Se? cretary gets eight and spends twenty thousand a y oar. No wonder the inves? tigation of the gold ring corruption brings to view so much exeoutive shame. The oapital is, indeed, au Augean stable. THU LONGEST AND TOUGHEST COCK? FIGHT ON RECORD.-A cock-fight was re? cently contested between two six pound cocks, owned by Messrs. McLoughlin and Wade, of this city, respectively, for $100. MoLiOughlin's was a blue red, and Wade's was a grey cock, and both birds were in splendid condition. The odds at the start were fifty dollars to forty dollars on the blue-red. When they were let go they met with a terrible crash ; and for forty minutes fought like devils, without either appearing to guin the slightest ad? vantage. After an hour's desperate strug? gling the betting changed in favor of the grey cook, but when twenty-five minutes more had elapsed it became even. There was great excitement during all this time among the spectators; one minute the betting would be in favor of the blue-red and the next in favor of the grey. Con? sidering the hard fighting, both birds were very strong on their feet. At the expiration of one hour and forty minutes the grey cook lay for dead in the pit, and the blue-red was declared tho winner, but he too died an honr after his victory. It was the longest and hardest cock-fight on record.-New York Sun. SOUTHERN FINANCES.-It has been sup? posed in Virginia that General Canby succeeded in finding the worst typo of men for officials that this age of revolu? tions has produced, but we judge that they are no worse, as a whola, than those who misgovern the other Southern Slates. For instance, the Comptroller of Florida says in his official report that the expenses of that State exceed "those of any preceing year by nearly 300 per cent." The Raleigh Sentinel says that the taxes in North Caroline are "the hsaviest by 700 or 800 per cent, that were ever assessed before." The Governor of Louisiana says to the Legislature in his message: "The financial condition of the State claims your careful considera? tion. It is such as to embarrass my ad? ministration, and the credit of the State, as tested by the prices commanded by her securities, is not satisfactory." NEW YOKE HOBRORS.-The Wednes? day morning's catalogue of crime for a single day in New York, as given in the World, is full and varied. Yesterday Patrick Kelley, keeper of a whiskey shop at 87 Front street, was stabbed in the abdomen by aa unknown ruffian. Jo? seph Ruloh, leader of a gang of rowdies, attempted to kill John Fisher, plumber, at No. 5 Canal street. Mrs. Catherine Welch, who was beaten by ber husband at 45 Mulberry street, still lies in a critical condition. Buckhout, the Sleepy Hollow murderer, attempted to assassinate his jailor and a fellow priso? ner on Monday. The coroner held an inqost yesterday morning in the murder ease of William Townsend, and the prisoner Reynolds was fully committed. H,o was sullen at the examination, and pretended to be stupid. He inquired with some interest "bow many years he was likely to get." THE HEAVIEST DRINKING YET.-The assessor of the second Virginia district recently directed a gauger to inspect a quantity of apple brandy which had been reported as distiiiea by a certain Sarty in Southampton County, in that tate. On repairing to the still he was informed that the amount distilled, 148 gallons, bad been drank by the family of the distiller, including his wife, mother, two girls and four sons, in forty-five days, and that he had no spirits for in? spection. There was no intention of fraud, the party paid the tux, and his neighbors assertod that during the time speoified the entire fumily were con? stantly under the influence of liquor. Tor the first time in many years, ono of Victor Hngo'e dramas was produced at a Paris theatre, on Wednesday night, a license having been obtained from the new government.
