OFFICES.-"Zeta," of tho Baltimoro Sim,
says it seems there are several officers of
tue army who, while serving Sa Georgia
as freedmen's bureau agent?, or in some
other oapacity, were elected to the Le
giaUturu of thai ?Stute. They have, it
nt ascertained, boen taking pay not only
its army office ra, but also as members of
the Legislature, and this is to be made a
subject of Congressional investigation.
To that end Mr. Brooks introduced a
resolution to-day, directing the General
of the army to report by what authority
these army officers hold the civil offices,
'thia resolution is the basis of further
inquiry. Now, if Mr. Brooks will only
take the trouble, he will find that the
army officers in Georgia bave high pre?
cedents for this iu Virginia, where it is
notorious that army officers, in addition
to their army, receive full salaries as
Judges, Secretary of the Commonwealth,
Auditors, Ac. Of course they wouldn't
do this if it wero wrong, nod if right in
Virginia, why not in Georgia?

Rev. Theodore Cuyler charges that
many of our oity elm relies are dying of
dignity. The Sunday discourses are too
polished to awaken a sinner, or nourish
u saint. The prayer-meetings are small,
stiff and stereotyped. When social
parties are lively and prayer-meetings
dull, it is no wonder that young people
aro attracted to the oue and desert the
other. He proposes to unite with his
ministerial brethren in making the
pulpits red-hot batteries, and to use
Goa's word as to make it a fire und hum?
mer molting and breaking tho heart of

?.ava that a few days ago the assets of the
Bank of the State of Georgin were sold
ut public outcry in Savannah, and a lot
of worthless securities in a heap to the
highest bidder for $3(35. In this lot of
"worthless trash" was $40,000 in bonds
of the Blue Ridge Railroad of South
Caroline.. The day after the sale tho
buyer, a well kuown Atlanta broker, sold
the Blue Ridge Railroad bonds for
$20,000 cash, reserving the balance of
the trash for another turn.

by the consolidation of the Churloltc and
South Carolina and the Columbia and
Augusta Railroad, and having executed
u first und only mortgage on its entire
property of 195 miles, iucluding equip?

formerly issued by said two companies
by an exchange of its finit mortgage
bonds. These bonds bear seven per
cent, interest, payable in Jaunary and
J illy, and are amply secured by a mort?
gage on property which cost pei- mile
more than three times the amount of |
bonds so issued.
The present price of the stock and the
business of the road give ample guaran- ,
tee of the security of the obligations for
u permanent investment. Indeed the
opinion is freely expressed, that there is
no safer bonds issued by any party or
corporation in the State, und they are
cheerfully commended to capitalists ns tl
safe investment.
