'?ft':pbi(the people, and satisfied every 4 body that there is "life in tho old land yet/' The tramp of Sherman's myrmi ; dons has hardly ceased resounding in our ears?,yet the country which they burned ' oat,' bas been reconstructed by our own industry, and a goodly show of the fruits of our labor on exhibition. The ?oe horees were not quite all stolen, tb o fino cattlo all .slaughtered, or the.spirit of j enterprise crushed out. Wo have passed through the. fiery ordeal of war; we,have endured the subversion of our . whole social system, the . anarchy and diaordors of no Government, and tho op? pressions and misrule bf the worst Gov .ernment tho sun ever shone upon, and . oro not dead yet. This- is comforting. ? Apart from the exhibition, we think ina TOT? ni on of old friends-the funning oft new. friendships, and the bringing to? gether ef all classes from all sections of Ute State-for outweigh the cost of tho exhibition. Planters and farmers, from tho vory nature of their avocations, " mingle very little with the world', and nib Blow to feel tho impulses of its on? ward march. No man could mingle with tho crowd at the exhibition, and be un? moved by tho buoyant spirit cf the peo? ple.' : No man could toke a survey of it without being wonder-struck by the numbers of manly, high-spirited young men and, brighb-f aced, lovely women . which graced the scene.
