'Intbe meuutime a nurnher of capitalista, keenly ultvo to tho advantages that'will accrue upon the island's becoming a part of this country, have'scnt largo Minns of ihouey to bo ex? pended ia Silgar, tobacco and indigo, which will he held th'er? till annexation taked place, when it will bo immediately shipped to New York and. Bostou, being admitted then free of the high duties. It is slated that the chairman of tho Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Hon; Charles Sumner, has signified his sanction of the proceedings. So olso does the New York Journal of Commerce, .whioh regards the purchase as a stepping? stone to Hay ti and Cuba. ANOTHER REVOLT OF A COOT.TE SHIP. A Havana letter to tho New York Worlds gives an account ot the arrivnl at that place, recently,11 of the French bark Tamaris, with sixty-eight coolies on board, out of 300 originally shipped at Macao, on the 5th of February last. "When the vessel was within 270 miles of Java, the coolies revolted and killed the captain, (lianuie.) whereupon tho crew took to the boats and succeeded in reach? ing Java. A Dutch war vessel was sent out, and after a thirty days' cruise over? took and recaptured tho Tamaris. The coolies, finding they were really to bo taken to Cuba, became desperate, cud jumped overboard at every opportunity, and BODIA even starved themselves to death. Ot the original number, fifty five perished iu the mutiny and in resist? ing the Dutch war vessel, and 177 com? mitted suicide, leaving only sixty-eight on board when tho vessel urrived at Ha? vana. SciNo A ViorxiANCB COMMITTEE. -T wo men in Kentucky who were hauged by a vigilance committee, but upon whom the work waa not doue very effectually, have come to life and are suing a dozen mem? bers of the committee for sixty thousand dollars damages. This is a very uunsual case. "Vigilance committee" is now n oommon name for a sort of organization that commits murder and does other violence in the name of law and order; but of course the murder and violence must be the same before the law, what? ever names'they are done in, so that if the half-hanged litigants get a verdict in their favor there will be a clear case for 1 the criminal courts against tho vigilants. Dr. "Livingstone is now credited with having 'discovered the chief sources of j the Nile. They arise between ten and twelve degrees South latitude, "or near? ly (says the doctor) in the position as? signed them by Ptolemy, whose river Rhapta is probably tho Rovuma." He has discovered also a large tribe, living in underground houses, in Rna. He is expected to arrive in England within a few months. The great traveler's modesty is well exemplified iu his candid avowal of his belief that the sources of tho Nile wore probably known to Ptolemy. Tho Nation accounts for Horace Gree? ley's defeat upon the supposition that the Now York farmers had not yot forgiven him for siguiug Jefferson Davis' bail bond. Is it possible that tho New York farmers are not yet aware of the war being over; or have they been left by it in suqh a blood-thirsty condition that they cann wt forgive any act bearing the slightest resemblance to generosity? In either event, it would appear that the school-master and political leader is moro needed at homo than ho is down South. DR. G. W. J.
