York Times gives an account of battles
at Cornarica, Fray Juan, Ramon, Palo
Prado and Sierra, between the Spaniards,
under Valmaseda, and the Cubans, under
Jordan. The Spaniards claim a victory
at Palo Prado, aud Ramon, Cornarica
and.- Pray. Juan as drawu battles. At
Sierra,- th* Spaniards were defeated by
Jordan: " The Spanish accounts report
300 insurgents killed in these engage?
ments.. The Cuban Generals Mazo and
Tam nz o were captured and immediate])'
executed. The Cubans are in force on
Corit?amae.stro River, encamped near the
Canto? three lines extending to Yagans

Mattiney, a commission merchant, of
Riohmond, Va., was found dead in his
bed at the Continental Hotel. No indi?
cation either of violence or suicide. His

A case is pending before the Supreme
Court, which involves the validity of the
title obtained by a purchaser at a sale
under confiscation by the Confederate
States, pursuant to the Sequestration
Act. Mr: Lee, a resident of Pennsylva?
nia prior to tho war, owned a flock of
sheep in Texas, which wore in charge of
an agent. They were confiscated, and
one Knox became the purchaser, at a
sale. After the war, Mr. Lee brought suit
in the Cirouit Court of Texas, to recover
damages of Knox for the wrongful taking
of the sheop. 1 The verdiet was for the
plaintiff-the Court Instructing the jury
that Kuox obtained no title by his pur?
chase. An appeal was taken-Knox in?
sisting that as the Confederate States
were a da faolo Government, having ac?
knowledged belligerent rights, a title
possessed by them in pursuance of con?
fiscation was valid, and their right to ex?
crciso tho power ae a means of war was
undoubted.
