' The pr?sent generation of young moa seem to have a strong aversion to every kind of trade, business, culling or oocn putioo that requires manual labor, and au equal strong ttMi<leucy toward sumo BO culled "genteel" employment or pro? fession. Tho result is se?u in a super? abundance of elegant peusnion, book? keepers, and clerks of every kind, who cnn get no employment, und are wasting their lives iu the vain pursuit of what is not, to be hud ; und a terrible overstock of lawyera without practice, and doctors without patients. The passion on the part of the boys mud young men to be clerks, office ut ti.adjoin, messengers-anything, so that it is uot work of the kind that will muka them mechanics or tradesmen-is a de? plorable sight to those who have full op? portunities to see the dis tressing effects of it in the struggle for snob employ? ments by those unfortunates who have put it oat of their power to do anything else by neglecting to learn some perma? nent trade or business, in which trained Blr.il! can always be turned to account. The applications for clerkships and simi? lar positions in large establishments are numerous beyond anything that would bo thought of by those who have no chunco to witness it. Parents and relativen, ns well ns the boyB and young men them? selves, seem to be afflicted with the same infatuation. To all such we say that the most unwise advico yon can give to your boy ia to encourage him to be n clerk ot a book keeper. At the best, it is not II well paid occupation. Yory frequently it is among tho very poorest. This it the ease when the clerk is fortunate enough to be employed; but if ho should happen to be out of a place, thou comet the weary soarch, the fearful htrupgU with the thousands of others look ii g Toi placen, tue never-ending disappoint meats, tho bops deferred that maku< the heart sick, tho strife with poverty the humiliations that tuko all tho mau hood ont of the poor souls, the priva tions and sufferings of tboso who depcm upon his earnings, and who have uo rc source whon bo is earning nothing. Nt father, no mother, no relative shouk wish to see their boys or kindred wastinf their young lives in striving after tin genteel positions that bring such t-riali and privations upon them in after lifo. How do these deplorably false notion: os to choice of occupation get into tin heads of boys? Why do they or theil parents consider it moro "genteel" o desirable to run errands, sweep out of fines, make fires, copy letters, etc., thai to make buts or shoes, or lay bricks, o wield tho saw or jack-plane, or bandi tho machinist's file, or the blacksmith' hammer? Wo have heard that some o them get these notions ut school. 1 this be true, it is n sad perversion of tb means of education provided tor on youth, which ure intended to mako theo useful as well aa intelligent members c society, and not useb-ss drugs un drones. .Should it bo so, that tho pre sent generation of boys get it into thei heads that, because they have mor school learning and book accomplish ments than their fathers had, they mut therefore look dowu upon the trades thu require skill und handicraft, and whos productions make np tho vast mass c the weah h of every country, then it i timo for Ibo controllers and the directoi to have the interior walls ef our hchoo houses covered with maxims and mottet warning them against the fatal error. \ Philadelphia Lodger. OTJTHAOK oroN THE AMunioAN F LAO I ASUNCION.-Gen. Tho local editor of a Columbus, M s?ssippi, paper having got married, a c temporary says: "May his futher-iu-li die rieh, and enable poor Stevens to I tire from tho printing business and l up a cuko-shop at a railway station." A letter from Borne, published ia au English paper, says: "Tho bishops oro beginning tu arrive, more or 1? ss luden with inouoy, which they aro to lay ut tho feet of tho Holy Father. The reception they experience is proportioned to the sums they briug, for it cannot bo con cesled thnt tho denim to raise money has hud much to do with thc convocutiou of tho couucil. Hitherto it does uot appear thut tho church has received very Iorgo sums. Tho Americans have not lyet given; it is from thenco that honps of|'-?old aro expected." Sunday has hitherto not been gene? rally observed in Frauco by a completo cessation from labor. Recently, how? ever, a decided movement han been rando in that country by mechanics, working? men and attendants in stores to obtain a holiday on the Brat day of the week, and extensivo strikes are now threatened to secure thia object. This movement is warmly supported by tho religious pa-1 pers, who assort that the working people desi re to enjoy the privilego of attending church. Few are probably aware of the fato of Lord By rou's heart. After his death at Mi88olonghi, in 1822, his body was cm b ilmcd and sent to England, but tho heart was begged and obtained by tho Greeks, who enclosed it in a silver case. Four years later, after tho protracted siege of Missoloughi, a sallying party, car? rying tho relic with them, cut a way with great sacrifice of lifo through tho Turkish lines; but tho heart was lust in crossing tho marshes.
