WHAT UEOOKES OF THE BIBLES?-A couple, of months ago it was discovered that the ship-loads of one edition of an Italian translation of the Bible, which the zealots sod devotees of an English concern were in the habit of exporting to Italy, were used for no more intel? lectual or moral purposes than the manu? facture of cigarettes. THE DEATH OF MB. JAMES ROSE.-This worthy representative of old South Caro? lina died yesterday .morning, at his resi? dence in this city, in the seventy-seventh fear of his age. . Mr. Rose wan.born in this State, and educated principally in England, as waa the custom of tho wealthiest families of the low country. For many years be sat in the lower house of the. State Legislature, and was for a long period President of the South? western Railroad Bank and a Director of tho South Carolina Railroad Company. In every position to whioh he was called he bore himself with quiet dignity, and an integrity beyond reproach. [Charleston News. _ THE BOARD OF TRADE AND THE AGRI? CULTURAL FAIR.-The Board of Trade, last night, passed a resolution donating $200 towards defraying the expenses of the ' State 1 Fair at Columbia. This amount, with the private collections 'made among our merchants, will make np the sum of about $1,000, which has been contributed by our city for that purpose. This is as it should be. The whole of the prosperity of our city is based upon tho agricultural products of the State, and of the neighboring States, and it is but fit and proper that we al? ways should contribute fully to any and every effort to develop tho agricultural resources of our Stato and people. Tho seaboard holds out tho hand of fraternity to the mountain. All parts of the Stato are one; their interests are identical; and each section should at all times bo ready to aid the other sections of tho State. What we want is development, and everything whioh aids development is a substantial benefit to nil parts of the State.-Charleston Courier. BLOODY DOINGS IN JACKSON COUNTY, FLORIDA.-On last Tuesday, the 28th ult., near the Natural Bridge, in Jackson County, Florida, there was a negro pic? nic-none present but negroes. A negro constable, Calvin Rogers, an over-bear? ing person, was present, and claimed to have been shot at. He then called for Wyatt Scurlook, one of his friends, who, on his approach to Rogers, caught upa child, and he and tho child wcro killed by one shot from some unknown person. Rogers, with tho party, returned to Marianna, and, with a party of whites and blacks,' went in search of the mur? derer. They could find no clue to the perpetrator of tho deed. A jury of in? quest, composed of whites and blacks, found that Soarlock died from a gun shot in the hands of an unknown person. The jury met on Wednesday, tho 29th, and made up their verdict on last Friday. On Wednesday night, the 29th ult., a white man named Columbus Sullivan, in going from his residence to his gin house, was shot in the eye and shoulder by some unknown person, and a negro boy with him wounded slightly. On Friday night, October 1, Colonel McCellan, a prominent lawyer of Mari? anna, was badly wounded and his daugh? ter killed. Circumstances point out Calvin Rogers and other negroes as the perpetrators. Oscar Granb rry, one of the negroes suspected, was killed on Inst Saturday morning.-Macon Telegraph. A FORTUNE HUNTER IN TROUBLE.-The celebrated "Baron" Henri do Riviero, whose attempted marriage with a belle of Mobile, and subsequent marriage with Miss Blunt, tbe daughter of a wealthy Southern lawyer, together with certain guano speculations and shooting affairs, have acquired for him some notoriety, was arrested at the New York Hotel on Saturday night, just as he was going to dinner, by Deputy Sheriffs Lawrence Delmar and John E. McGowan. The charge against him is a very serious one. It appears from the statement of Mlle. Helene Stille, a wealthy and beautiful Parisian Indy, that some years since Do Riviere met her in Paris, and represent? ing himself as an unmarried man, (al? though he has a wife and two children living,) and also giving out that bo was a French nobleman of fortune, induced her, after selling her estates in France, to accompany him as his wife to South America. There they traveled in great state, and tho expenses were all defrayed with the proceeds of tho lady's property. Aftor spending somo time in Limn, Peru, they returned to Paris. Finally, he learned that his wife was living and he left her. He came to this city and she followed him. Learning, a few days ago, that ho was staying fora short time at tho New York Hotel, sh o sought the advice of a lawyer, and obtained from Justice Dowlinga warrant for DeRiviore's arrest. > If the charges against DeRiviero are fully substantiated, it is likely that his travels will not extend mnoh further for some time to come. DeRiviero, several years ago, shot at Billy Mulligan, tho pugilist, inn Broadway saloon. After his marriage with Miss Blunt, he delivered a leoturo in this city on "Love." His career hos been a somewhat eventfnl one. \New York Times. If the girl of tho period but knew how essential to her {ature happiness ? com Elete knowledge of household duties will e, she would give up her daily prome? nade, abandon her panniers, gather up the tresses that float so negligently over her shoulders, discard high heeled boots, thrnm the piano only after having first taken a lesson daily on the grid-iron and frying-pan, and make her own bed in tho morning, instead of leaving that task to her mother or tho chambermaid. Herne, a loaliug druggist ia Monti cello, III., in & letter of Jnne 6,1868, writes to this effect: "Having aold Hoatotter's Bitters for the past four years, I cannot but speak, of the article as being tho best tonto and appe? tizer extant. During the ague season of 1865-6, I could not keep a sufficient stock on hand to supply my customers. In fact, your Bittere was as staple at quinine. I learn that physi? cians proscribe it all over the Western coun? try. Indeed, a great manv families think they are not safe without your invaluable tonio." J. K. Witherspoon, ?sq., a magistrate of Kershaw County, H. C., states, under date April 13.1868. that ho has used the Bitters constantly in his own family for the previous two years. He nrst tried the preparation when suffering from exhaustion produced by a se? vere attack of fever. Before the first bottle was finished ho experienced a remarkable change for the better. Ho had tried brandy at tho outset, but found that did him more harm than good. In one month from the timo he commenced using the Bitters his health, strength and appetite were restored. He had recommended tho article to others in like cir? cumstances, and never known it to fail, and had found it a perfect specific for chills and fever. Mr. Samuel Young, of Clarion, Ta., undei dato April 6, 18G8, certifies that he was com plotely cured of "ono of the most distressing attacks of dyspepsia that ever afflicted an] mortal," by throe bottles of tho Bitters, aftei "various other remedies had proved power loss." Restored to perfect health, ho thanki "that excellent preparation for tho result." Dr. G. M. Spencer, of Brush Creek, Rfcrr County, Ala., writing thence February 8, I860 says: "I have used yonr Stomach Bitters fo several yoars in my practico, and find thou superior*to most of tho Bitters now proscribe! by tho profession generally."
