chasm varies from 800 to 500 feet. The
rapids begin 1,900 feet above the first

Pulpit", is 580 feet high. Four small
streams pour into tho chasm, forming
beautiful cascades, known as Stairway,
Hawthorne, Vandevere, and Ribbon.

old process is preserved in the new.
An imaginative writer says: "Woman
is compounded of three articles-sugar,
tincture of arnica, and soft soap. Sugar,
because of .the sweetness which is appa?
rent in most women-?alas! that in soma
it should have acidulated into strong do?
mestic vinegar ; arnica, because in wo?
man is to be found that quality of heal?
ing and soothing after the bruises and
wounds which afflict ns men in the great
battleiof life; and soft soap, for reasons
too obvious to need sp eci fi cation."
A chestnut tree was felled on the farm
of Mi. Conley, in Carroll County, Ga.,
on the 6th nit., which made 1,500 mils.
After the tree was cut down, the longest
cross-cut saw was procured that was pos?
sible to be had: and. two men, with this
saw and their axes, labored faithfully for
a whole day in sawing the first cut. Tho
top of the stump measures nine feet in
diameter.
The people of the United States are
plundered of $20,000,000 a year, by the
tariff ott coal, and pf $23,000,000 a year
by the tariff on iron. $43,000,000 a year
thus go straight from tho pockets of
hard-working people into tho packet?
of only these, two classes cf monopolists
and the Congressmen who conspire to
