It is a rieb store, from which a few fragments such as we have borrowed cannot be. missed. Wo commend the work cordially to our readers, and con? duelo with half a dozen extracts which we had marked for quotation : THE ATJTHOB OF "ION." His first tragedy, "Ion," earned gene? ral applause, and in defiance of the ad? vice of prudent or timid friends ho pro? duced two other tragedies. His bill, however, did not pass, and the Work was taken ont of his hands. The aot which at length passed the Le? gislature did not grant as much as Tal? fourd asked for. The one oct which ought to be known by his name was one conferring on unhappy wives, separated from their husbands, a right to have n sight of their children. A TOO-CLEVER COUNSELLOR. My immediate senior on the circuit was Henry Cooper. Ho was very far my superior in talent for business-indeed, in some respects, he was an extraordinary man. His memory, his cleverness, were striking; but so was his waut of judg? ment, and it often happened that bis clever and amusiug bits told as much against us for bis client. Oue day he was entertaining the whole court, when Rolfe, (now tho Baron, then almost the junior,) whispered to mc: "How clever that is! How I thank God I am not so clever!" I onco saw Cooper extort a laugh from Lord Ellenborough in spite of himself. "Bat it is said, my client got drr ,k. Why, everybody gets drunk." Tuen changing bis voice from a shrill tone to a half-whisper, and with a low bow, ho added: "Always excepting your Lord? ships and the Bishops." . : QUEEN VICTORIA. She passed through a glass door, and, forgetting its transparency, was seen to run ofi like a girl, as she is. Mr. Quayle, in corroboration of this, told me that lately, asking a maid of honor how she liked her situation, and who, of courae, expressed her delight, she said "I do think myself it is good fun playing Queen." This is just as it should be. Il she had not now the high spirits of t healthy girl of eighteen, we should have less reason to hope she would turu out t sound sensible woman at thirty.
