Sailed ' schooner Wanata, Palma. THE TOBACCO CROP.-About seventy fire per cent, of tho tobacco crop is pro? duced ia five States. Unlike the crops of wheat and eora whioh aro grown throughout the country, particularly in tho West, where the yield is enormous, a failure of the tobacco crop in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Maryland, would affect the price of this Btaple very materially in the com? mercial centres. The indications in Virginia, which raiaedi thirty per cent, of the crop in 1867, and in North Carolinn, are that the yield Will be reduced one-half. In Tennessee and Kentucky, we be? lieve the season has not been as favora? ble as usual. So that, as we have said, a material reduction of the crop in these largely tobacco producing States, will tend : to elevate prices, and that this will be the result in reference to the tobacco crop, we think it reasonable to conclude. Tobacco is now active. During the past week in New York, Kentucky was held for nu advance and m a nu fm tured tobacco was in brisk demand anfl buoyant.-Petersburg Express. MEXICO AND THE EAGLE OF THE NOUTH. A late Mexican paper says that the local affairs of that oountry are getting worse and worse every day, and that "when revolntions nave destroyed tho republic, .when our fields, laid waste, ?hall be sa? turated with tho blood of our brothers, ?and the eagle of tho North shall swoop down upon the corpse of our country, its treacherous politicians will go abroad to enjoy the pleasures which their riches will purchase, while the poorer sons of Mexico will be dragging in tho dust the chains of slavery." But this picture is too gloomy. When tho eagle of tho North swoops down upon Mexico it will be to liberate her people from the chains of anarchy, to take off their rags of poverty and -wretchedness and to clothe and feed them from the fat of the land. THE CUBAN R?VOLUTION.-Letters from the Cobran revolutionary army, tia Key West, to friends in Washington City, contain news up to the 16th ult. No en? gagement is reported since the one near Puerto Padre, on the 5th ult., (an ac? count of which has been published,) in the district commanded by Gen. Jordan. All the available Spanish force is being thrown in this district to reinforce Vul moseda, uud an early engagement of im? portance may be expected between the forces of Jordan and Valmasedo. Gen. ? Jordan asserts his readiness and desire for the contest, and is confident of suc? cess. It is stated that a defeat of Val rnaseda would virtually end the war, as it would bo impossible for Spain ever to semi troops enough to regain the position that they would lose. Gen. Jordan is placing his men in position for the fight which was almost daily expected. In Gen. Quesada's command, besides a few skirmishes between small parties, it is reported that there lins been no engage? ment. The {Spanish troops occupy forti? fied positions in the towns, and have suffered so severely from disease and other causes that the commanders are unable to do more than maintain their positions Insurgents with their fami? lies, to the number of 1,600, have pre? sented themselves before tho Spanish authorities near Holquin, and asked for? giveness and protection.
