V-NO. 135 ^J?Bt?i^^^m^L NOBLE CoinotJCT OF ; A IHEQBP.-The Angosta Chronicus and Sentinel .relates a case of negro unselfishness that is worthy of record. A colored man, named Dan. Turnor, lind been convicted by a magis? trate for stealing a dog, and sentenced to twp months on the chain-gang, when the.following occurred: When'the justice hod announced tho conviction of the accused, a negro man, about tw?nty*five years of age, had sen? tenced him to two months' hard labor on the chain-gang, and the crier had ad ?* burned the court, the performances teing over, a yoong negro, apparently not more than twenty years old, stepped up to the lawyer who had defended his brother, and whispered something in his ear. The attorney smiled, muttered a few words in reply, and then the negro turned to the justice, and the following singular conversation ensued: Negro-"Judge, ain't there no way yon oait fix ii so Limb I can go on the chain-ga?g in place of Dan?" The Justice-"Is the prisoner a rela? tion of yours ?" Negro-"I'm his brother, an I want for to work ont his time, cause he's older dan me, and have a wife, and his wife is sick. I aint married, an I am williug to go on the gang in his place, and let him stay wid his wife." The Justice-"But I cannot allow an innocent man to suffer for a guilty one. You can't take your brother's place un? less yon swear that he is iunocent, and that yon stole tho dog." Negro-"I can't swear to that. Judge, but I am Wiitin to make his crime mine, and suffer in hi? place, so it don't make no difference." The Justice finally succeeded in mak? ing the faithful brother understand tbat it did make a difference, and, evidently greatly disappointed, he left the court? room, and Dan was taken to jail. MURDER IN HALL COUNTY.-Tho Air Line Eagle says that on tho night of the 19th instant, about twelve miles from Gainesville, a negro woman named Viney Jackson, was brutally murdered by somo person, supposed to be the young mau who has been living with her in a crimi? nal manner for the last two years. The citizen^ are active in ferreting out the criminal, and no doubt will succeed. A bullock was being driven through the streets of West Newton, Penn., re? cently, when he became unmanageable, gored one man to death and fatally in? jured another. He thea turned into a milliner's shop and made a raid on the fancy colored ribbons, etc. The citizens finally despatched the brute. Taylor Blow died in St. Louis yester? day. His life was insured in fourteen different companies for a total amount of $117,000. He had done this for the benefit of his creditors. At Schenectady, a white woman was recently married to a negro from Albany. And the thermometer at OJ degrees. The colored troops fought nobly. The war in Japan has ended, and leaders in the rebellion are to be tried at Yeddo, and if found guilty, punished. One Thousand Dollars Reward! ESCAPED, on the evening of the Cth inst., from the South Carolina Penitentiary, where he was detained on a charge of murder, WILLIAM K. TOLBERT. He is about thirty years of agc, five feet ten and-a-half iuchos high; weighs about 170 pounds; fair complexion; sandv hair and whis? kers; light blue eyes, with red lids, almond shaped, closely together; remarkably square shoulders; small fact; with a peculiar utter? ance of voice.
