The ex-blockade runner, Hornet, hail? ing from Portland, Me., and cleared for Liverpool, via Havana, was captured to? day on suspicion of intending to violate the neutrality laws. The Hornet had twenty-five men aboard armed with re? volvers, and was attended by u tug, whioh escaped. NASHVILLE, August 16.-Governor Senter has arrived in this city, and met with a brilliant reception. Ho was es? corted from the railway depot to tho City Hotel, where he delivered a speech in response to tho address of ex-Govern? or Neil Brown. In the course of his re? marks, Governor Senter emphasized one point, and that was that in Tennessee there must be no proscription on account of rebellion, race, or color; suffrage and the fullest political and civil rights must be free to all. He continued by saying that the wounds of the past must heal, and that brotherly love and fraternal feeling was now to be cultivated all round in Tennessee. He thought the circum? stances were ripe for a new party, which would discard dead issues and act upon the living present. Bourbonism on the one hand and proscriptive radicalism on the other should be ignored and set aside, and a new departure taken which would tend to liberal and progressive ideas and measures. The young men of the State, he said, carried the recent election with such impetus that the old judges were almost unable to dooide how far they had gone ahead. The wisdom of age should temper Young America, but it was striding along like an Arab onrser.o Colonel Vandyne, on the part of the United States Government, is hore to sue the Nashville and Chattanooga Rail? road for $1,600,000 for rolling stock sold by the Government to the road. The rood offsets the claim by a bill of over $3,000,000 for the use of the road during the war. This will serve as a test case for a number of other Southern Roads. On Friday last, three convicts in Geor? gia came to untimely ends-one was killed on the Macon and Augusta Railroad by having the embankment to fall upon him while digging; another died of sun-stroke and the third was shot while attempting to escape. A little boy, named Parker, whilo on his way to Sunday school, last Sunday, accidentally stepped upon a piece of plank in a mill-race, was precipitated into the water and drowned. It is stated that the health of George Peabody, who is now at tho Wrhite Sul? phur Springs, is no better. Those most intimate with him say he is failing fast, and he cannot now write his own name. A duel was fought near Atlanta, Ga., a few days ago, between an engineer, named Maloney, and a Mr. Butoch, in which the former was killed and the latter se? verely wounded. A negro man named Nelson Thomas was killed by lightning, near his house, in the public road, on the plantation of the late Gen. Tobin, near Blackville, tho latter part of last week. SurrosED Loss OP 400 LITES.-The steamers United Kingdom, from New York to Glasgow; Cheduba, from Bom? bay for Rangoon, and two others are be? lieved to have been lost, during tho last three months, with all on board-about 400 persons. A terrible fire broke out in Paris on the night of the 23d ult., in the depot of the Compagnie do Petites Voitures, in the Rue Stanislas, which was destroyed, to? gether with a number of adjacent build I ings, occupied by poor families-numbers of whom have lost their all. 450 cabs I and ?80,000 of other property was lost. Operations have been commenced on the railroad bridge over the Savannah River, for the Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad. It is to bo of the "How Truss" patent, supported by four stone piers; tho extremo length will bc 900 feet, and it is to be completed by the first of January. Mr. W. Murdoch is the contractor for the masonry, and the well known bridgo builder, Mr. Renno, of North Carolina, has chargo of the su? perstructure.
