A li IU RTL Y JOKE.-A ghastly joke is reported from New- Orleans. A young doctor of that city paid his addresses to a lady, who, among other cariosities in her parlor, had a human skull, to which the physician took a wonderful fancy, and repeatedly solicited her fdr it. Soma mornings since, ho was agreeably sur? prised by receiving from his young lady friend a beautiful looking pudding, with ber compliments. He sent it at once to bis rOom mate, an apothecary, with in? structions to have it for dinner that day. A friend, dropping in at meal-time, was invited to dine, and accepted, in consi? d?ration of the fino pudding which was promised. After the meat dinner, the pndding-which appeared a very chef d'ouve-was brought on, and the trio united in praise of its excellence. In? deed, they one and all asserted that there was a peculiarly agreeable flavor abont it, which one thought lemon, another vanilla. The doctor insisted on reple? nishing the saucers of his friends, and waa about to help himself a second time, when he struck, with the knife, a hard substance. Pushing his explorations further, ho Ashed np, to bis horror, a grinning sknll-the very skull he had so often vainly importuned his lady friend to give him. That dinner party adjourn? ed with wonderful rapidity, and with frightful exclamations. THE COON AND THE CABPBT-BAGOBR. The Baton Bouge Advocate is responsi? ble for tho following good story of coons and carpet-bnggers: "Is that ooon lively?" ' "Oh, yes, sir," replied the black pos? sessor of as wild a specimen as ever made tracks in the Comit? Swamp. .'Well, I want a real lively fellow; pnt I him on that root," pointing to a lower I knob of a very tall oak, "and let's see if be will Btir himself." No sooner said than done, and the coon went up the treo like a greased streak of lightning. "You satisfied, boss, he's lively?" "Well, yes; but I don't want a coon in a tre?-top." The freedman looked up the tree, whistled, and scratched his head for an idea, and said: "Well, boss, dat coon isl like a carpet-bagger-werry promising) when ho's down, but when he's np he ain't no use to nobody."
