WASHINGTON, April 2.-In the House, the
Emotion Commit too reported that H?ge, of
South Carolina, has prima facia- right to
bia seat.
In the Senate, a memorial was preseuted
from oitizeus of Kentucky, protestiug
against relief, aud asserting that officers ex?
cluded by the fourteenth amendment are
the most mischievous in the State. Action
regarding the excluded States is regarded
impracticable at this session.
In the Senate, Sumner and Wilson pre
sanfet] petitions for the removal of political
disabilities. Howe introduced a bill provid
ing that the Qnarermaater and Commissary- j
General examine claims for property taken
or used by the army of the United States,
and report to Congress all the facts ; no
money to be payable until Congress appro?
priates the money ; claims to be preseuted

Among the nominations to-day, by Presi?
dent Grant were several females and colored
persons. Charles Wilder (colored) bas been
nominated ns postmaster at Columbia, S. C.
There were no Southern confirmations.
Two colored men were nominated ss justices
of the pence in Ute District of Columbia.
Tlie brick-lnyers in the navy yard struck
to-day, in consequence of the reduction of
twenty per cent, for eight hours' work, ac?
cording to Hoar's decision. Committees
from several navy yards are here, urging a
reconsideration of the decision. A poll of
the Senate shows . six majority iu favor of
Longstreet's confirmation. No Southern
confirmations to-day.

Paulina W. Davis writes to the Providence
(R. I.) Journal to deny a silly story that she
bad becu poisoned in Florida. She spoaks
severely of the sensational writers who pend
on such tales of malicious temper and vio?
lence on the part of the residents of the
South, and says: "Throughout tho South
for thu past three winters, I have met
only kiuduess and courtesy from all classes,
ami by some I believe my visits are gladly
welcomed."
In the great conflagration of steamboats
at St. Louis on Monday night seven boats
wero burned, valued, with their cargoes, at
8337,500, on which there was au insurance
of 890,000.

of tho Commission to codify the laws of the
State, ten thousand five hundred dollars.
All contingent expenses connected there?
with and allowed by law, shall be paid out
of the contingent fund of the State, upon
tho order of the Comptroller-General.

cause to be collected, a sufficient per
coutum of taxes, to raise a necessary amouut
of money, upon the assessed valuations of
the property of the State, to meet the ap?

an amount execoding one million dollars.
