Kiss HIM FOR HIS MOTH KU.-It was a very pretty and very pious conceit of that old lady who kissed the dead youth for his mother. So forcibly has it appealed to popular admiration since, that no inconsi? derable number of live young men have had the same affectionate caresa bestowed on them, out of respeot for the same venerable relative. A striking example of this was afforded a few evenings since, by a young lady-who enjoys the undivided affections of a handsome down-town clerk. It so hap v pened that, some weekB ago, his mother diod. His heart was consoled in this great bereavement by the affectionate sympathy of his employer's fascinating daughter. It ia not strange that this sympathy at last ripened into love. The parents noted and approved their daughter's choice, but wisely Kept their own counsel. The interesting relations, however, were distined to come to light in a way lenst expected One even? ing, the young couple were enjoying a plea? sant tete-a-tete in a secluded nook of the par? lor. The old gentleman happened, by the merest accident, to step in und take a r.eat unobserved by the young people. Suddenly his attention was arrested by one of those prolonged luxurious kisses which only lovers ever interchange. "What noise is that?" the parent loudly exclaimed. Silence like death. "I say, Julia, what noise was that?" "S-i-r-sir?" "What are you doing there?" "N-o-t-h-i-n-g, sir!" "Who are you kissing there?" "Only-only William, sir; his mother's dead, you know-and-and I thought it wouldn't be wrong to kiss him for her, you know, sir!" "Humph 1" and tho old gentleman took his leave, doubtless thinking how fortunate the deceased lady was, to be so affectionate? ly remembered. -o A LONG ABSENCE.-Thirty-six years ago, a man living in this County (then Stokes) was arrested for some violation of the law. He was tied and placed on horseback and started off to Germantown, then the County seat. After he was arrested his wife man? aged to slip him a knife, and on tho way to prison he cut his bonds, and being well mounted, he made good his escape. Noth? ing was heard from him after his escape by his family. He had been married but a short time, and his wife mourned for him as one dead. A few weeks since an old gray-headed man stopped at the house where she was living and inquired for her. Sh o came ont, when he asked her ?f she knew him, she told him she had no recol? lection of ever having seen him before- He then made himself known as her long ab? sent husband; and now. after a separation of nearly forty years, tney are again living together as happily as a newly-married cou? ple.- Winston (N.
