Scott, for the pardon of John Burgess, who waa convicted of man-slaughter at the November term, 1867, and sentenced to thirteen months im? prisonment in the Penitentiary, and was still in confinement, the Governor addressed a letter to the Superintendent of the Peni? tentiary as follows: "I am informed that Burgess is still iu confinement, although thirteen months, since the dato of his sentence, have expired; and the reason assigned for this detention, is, that he remained ic the jail at Spartan burg for five months subsequent to his sen? tence before he was transferred to the Peni? tentiary. Thia, ii true, was no fault of the prisoner's; and, in my opinion, it is unjust and illegal to make him accountable for it. The date of .the prisoner's sentence, if he is and continues to be in tho custody of the officers of the la w,. should bo the official oom men ce? ment of his imprisonment, and it should terminate upon the fulfillment of the period designated. If, upon investigation, you shall find the above statements verified, you will release John Burgess from imprison? ment forthwith, and you will pursue the same coarse in reference to all similar .caaes." -o The negroes in Washington, on being refused a chunco to participate in the inau? guration ball, have decided not to attend as waiters, and to get up a ball of their own; which, the/ are assured, either Grant or Colfax will attend in person. Many of tho more respectable colored people say they would not attend the ball of the white folks, so many of the white women there invited being other than respectable. -o-! Mrs. Linooln has petitioned Congress for a pension. She had better petition her Creator for common sense; or something which would enhance her reputation as a 'genuine lady-a trae, sensible, high-minded woman, instead of a greedy beggar, who thinks just enough of her husband to drag his corpse from its resting place and exhibit it to the world as street beggars exhibit stolon children.
