C., January 1.- Gus Holmes, .? mulatto, waa executed to-day, for the murder of Matthew King, in Jane, 1867. There was a large orowd in attendance and a good deal of excitement among negroes. When desired to stand forth, for tho pur? pose of having the rope adjusted, the con? demned gave wav and had to be supported until the drop fell. The knot slid to tue back of bia neck, and the fall being only a foot and a half, the neck was not broken. He breathed eight minutes and life was ex? tinct in twelve. He made full confession of the crime and a number of others which he had been guilty of. In view of the questioned authority of Mr. Johnson's amnesty, the following from Mr. Lincoln's proclamation, dated Decem? ber 8, 1868, is important: "Whereas, in and by the Constitution of the United States," it is provided that the President shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offences against the United States, except in cases of impeachment; and whereas, the congressional declaration of Congress for a limited and conditional pardon, accords well with the established judicial exposition of the pardoning power, &c." When the puro medicinal restorative, now so widely known as Wolfe's SCHIEDAM SCHNAPPS, ivas introduced into tho world, under tho endorse? ment of 4,000 leading members of tho medical pro? cession, some twenty years ago, its proprietor was '.veil aware that it could not wholly escapo tho lonalty attached to new and useful preparations, lie, therefore, endeavored to invest it with tho strongest possiblo safeguard against counterfeit? ers, and to render all attompto to pirate it difticult ind dangerous. It was submitted to distinguish 3d chemists for analysis, and pronounced by thom :ho purest spirit ever manufactured. Its purity md properties having been thus ascertained, samples of the article wero forwarded to 10,000 physcians, including all tho leading practitioners u tho United States, for purposes of experiment. K. circular, requesting a trial of tho preparation ind a report of tho result, accompanied each jpecimen. 4,000 of the most eminent medical men in the Union promptly responded. Their opinions if tho article wero unanimously favorable. Such a preparation, they said, had long been wanted by tho profession, as no reliance, could bo placed on Ihe ordinary liquors of commorce; all of which .'.ere moro or less adulterated, and, theroforo, unfit for medical purposes. Tho peculiar excel? lence and strength of the oil of junipor, which Formed one of tho principal ingredients of thc Schnapps, together with an unalloyed character if tho alcoholic element, give it, in the estimation if the faculty, a marked superiority over overy lither diffusive stimulant as a diuretic, tonie and restorative. Those satisfactory credentials from professional men of tho highest rank woro published in a condensed form, and enclosed with each bottlo if tho Schnapps, as ono of tho guarantees of its genuineness. Other pr?cautions against fraud ?vero also adopted; a patent was obtained for the irticle, the laoel was copyrighted, a/ac simile of ?he proprietor's autograph signature wa? attached ,0 each iaoei and cover, Iiis name and that of tho preparation were embossed on tho bottles, and the sorks wore sealed with his private seal. No article tiad ever been sohl m this country under tho name if Schnapps prior to tho introduction of Wolfe's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps, in 1861: ?nd th? label waa deposited, as his trade mark, in the United States District Court forth? Southern Dis? trict of Now Tork daring that year. It might bo suppoeod, by persona unacquainted with the daring charaotor ol th? pirates who prey upon the reputation of honorable merchants, by vending deleterious trash auder their name, that the protections so carefully thrown around these Schnapps would have precluded the introductions and sale of counterfeits. They seem, however, only to have stimulated tho rapacity of imposters. Tho trade mark of the proprietor has boen stolen; the endorsement which bis Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps alone received from tho medical pro? fession has bown claimed by mendacious humbugs; bis labols an bottles have been imitated, his ad? vertisements paraphrased, his circulars copied, aud, worso than all, dishonorable retailers, after disposing of the genuine contents of his bottles, have tilled them up with common gin, the most deleterious of all liquors, and thus made bis name and brand a cover for poison. The public, the medical profession and the sick, for whom the Schiodam Aromatic Schnapps is prescribed as a remedy, are equally interested with tho proprietor in tho detection aud supp ussion of these nefarious practices. The genuino article, manufactured at the establishment of the under? signed, in Schiedam, Holland, is distilled from a barley of the finest quality, and flavored with an essential extract of tho berry of the Italian juniper, of unequalled purity. By a process un? known in tho preparation of any other liquor, it is freed from every acrimonious and corrosive ele? ment. Complaints have been received from tho leading physicians and families in thc Southern States, of the salo of cheap imitations of thc Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps in those markets; and travel? ers, who are in tho habit of using it as an antidoto to tho baneful influence of unwholesome river water, testify that cheap gin, put up in Schiedam bottles, is frequently palmed off upon tho unwary. The'agents of tho undersigned have been requested to institute inquiries on the subject, and to for? ward to him tho names of such parties as they may ascertain to be engaged in the atrocious system of deception. In conclusion, the under? signed would say that he has produced, from under tho hands of tho most distinguished men of science in America, proofs unanswerable of tho parity and medicinal excellence of the Schiedam i Aromatic Schnapps; that he ha? expended ninny thousand dollarsiu surrounding it with guarantees and safeguards, which bc designed should protect the public and himself against fraudulent imita? tions; that bc has shown it to be the only liquor in' the world that can be uniformly depended upon as unadulterated; that he has challenged investi? gation, analysis, comparison, ?nd experiment in all its forms: and from every ordeal the prepa? ration which boara bis name, ?eal and irado mark, bas come off triumphant. Ho, therefore, feels it a linty he owes to his fellow-citizens generally, to the medical profession and tho sick, to denounce and expose tho Charlatans who counterfeit these evidences of identity, and he calls upon tho press and tho public to aid him in his efforts to remedy so Kreat an evil.
