J., week before last, Geo. MoKin less, a collier, and Abijah Davis, a j man employed by the former, were | lost upon a lonely road, while they wore moving their families from South River. When they were within about ] two miles of their stopping place, tho two men loitered behind the ?wagons, and, it is supposed, lost their way in the darkness and storm. Their bodies have lately been found in tue wilderness, about four miles apart. The London Times comments with wonder on tb 3 rapid progress of the Pacific Railroad. It notes the extra? ordinary featu ros of the road, com? mends the enfr- orise of tho Amaricen people in overcoming obstacles here? tofore deemed insurmountable, and explains the influence this great pro? ject will exercise on tho commerce of the world. The advance in State and city se? curities, noticed as having taken place on Tuesday, was maintained yesterday, when State bonds were still quoted at sixty-three and city stock at fifty. Money is rather easy, and the whole aspect of affairs is brighter and moro encouraging. [Charleston News. Commodore Lawrence Kearney died at his residence in Perth Amboy, li. J., on Sunday. He was retired as a captain of the navy on the 21st of December, 1861. Ho entered the naval service as a midshipman on July 24, 1807. Tho State Department, it is now said, has refused to accept Mr. Re? verdy Johnson's much-vaunted "set? tlement" of the Alabama claims and kindred questions, and has tele? graphed certain modifications on which it insists. A colored man was killed, near Goklsboro, on Saturday, by simply stumbling while carrying a bushel of corn on his head. His neck was broken. The reported larceny of $8,000,000 is the latest sensation in the records of thievery concerning the Erie Rail? road. The health of Gen. Franklin Pierco -the only survivor of the fourteen persons whom the people have elect? ed successively to the Presidential choir-is very precarious. Long pending negotiations have resulted in the consolidation of the American and the Merchant's Union Express Companies.
