A meeting of the colored people waa held at Liberty Hall, says tho Charleston News, on Monday night last, vf hen addresses were delivered by the Bev. R. H. Cain, John R. Morris and the Rev. John Graham. Tho recent excitement in the city was dis? cussed, and the conduct of all persons who fomented disorder was con? demned. In view of the fact that the impressiou had gone abroad.that the whole colored community had sanctioned riot and disorder, a com? mittee was then appointed to draft s> preamble, and resolutions which should express the sentiments of the respectable aud law-abiding colored people in this city. A committee was then appointed who, on Thurs? day, the 19th inst., reported the fol? lowing preamble and resolutions, which were unanimously adopted : We, your committee, to whom was referred the subject of drafting pre? amble and resolutions expressive of your views relative to the present aud recent excitement in our city, most respectfully report the folio wi u g as the result,of tlmir labor : Whereas, The present political ex? citement has moved this community in snch a manner as to distraot pub? lic opinion, alienate men of all classes, and sever those friendly rela? tions and destroy the good will which ought to exist in every peaceful and prosperous community ; And whereas, since tho municipal election there has existed nndue ex? citement, and uncalled for disturb? ance? and violation of law and order; And whereas, these acts have been committed chiefly by a class of irre ?*" sponsible persons, who do not repre? sent tho intelligent, industrious, vir? tuous and law-ubiding colored people of this city; And whereas, the various elections he.l? in this city and throughout the State have been marked with peace and quietude by every class of citi? zens, with the exception of tho re? cent municipal election in this city; And whereas, tho conduct of a por? tion of our fellow-citizeua at aud since has been damagiug to tho colored psoplo of this city, who did not take part in nor give countenance to such actions; And whereas, the public press, in denonnoiug said conduct, mudo no discrimination among tho colored citizens; And (whoreas) we regard tho sweeping charges as unjustly placing tbree-fourtbs of the honest, peacea? ble and innocent citizens in the same light as violators of law; therefore bo it Resolved, That it is the wish of that class who represent so large a majo? rity of the respectable honest work? ing classes of this city, that all acts in violation uf luw uuu order oro un? qualifiedly condemned by them, and that the course pursued by certain parties since tho election in threaten? ing and abu6?Dg persons for exercis? ing their sacred right in voting, does not meet their approval, because it violates tho saored safegnard of Ame? rican liberty. Resolved, Thnt in the lato eleotiou we have earnestly desired the well being of the citizens, irrespective of race or color, and the prosperity of our city and tho success of every branch of commercial and industrial enterprise. Resorted, That we heartily pledge our support to the officers of the luw to preserve the peace and dixjr>?.?y ot our cit" government, and to estab? lish order to this community. Resolved, That we regard it of the highest importance that we have a city government which con be sus? tained by all classes of men, and be made beneficial to all alike. Resolved, That wo earnestly appeal to the merchants and business men of Charleston, and the whole coun? try, not to deprive the honest, indus? trious and well-meaning colored peo? ple of their only means of livelihood for opinion's sako, and ask them to remember that iu these exeiting times we all should exercise charity and forbearance. Resolved, That wo pledge to tho citizens of Charleston our moat heartv co-operation for the prosperi? ty of our long wasted city and State; and that whatever we, as citizens, mechanics, laborers and urtisans, oau do to forward this great end, shall bo cheerfully done by us. Resolved, That wo regard the re? storation of business and goncral prosperity among tho people as tho real end and design of all politics; and whenever any party shall seek to over-ride this great principle, it ceases to meet tho real end of good government. TUE ANTIQUITY OF MAN.-At a re? cent meeting of the Chicago Acade? my of Science, some interesting facts were introduced to prove the great antiquity of the human race. Deep down in the Nile, in Egypt, it was stated that the remnin? of men had been found, to which tho Pyramids were young. In 1854, borings wore mndo between Heliopolis and Mem? phis. They wero carried to the depth of seventy-two feet, and did not pierce through tho Nile mud. At every foot, fragments of pottery were found. Tho deposit of mud is cal? culated to have been two and a half inches in a century. Tho pieces of pottery found nt tho lowest depths would thus be 38,000 years old. Com? pared with it the Thebes of Homer wore modern. During tho past sea? son in California, in the gold drift had beon found a skeleton of a man covered with three overflows of lava. If true, it carried back tho epoch of the introduction of mau to a remoter time than any European observa? tions. Wbilo there are abundant evidences of glacitation of great parts of this continent, these phenomena were wanting in California as though tho Rocky Mountains acted as a bar? rier. But glaciers covered vast areas of the Sierra Nevada and crushed up the gold strata and carried them down. Tho grinding up might bo referred to the glacial period. It was probable that comparative tranquili? ty followed those violent phenomena. The valleys were filled with mortified drift. Those deposits served mainly as the grave of the fossil elephant, while tho mastodon was found iu swamps. At Natchez, there was a terrace of sixty feet, where Dr. Nixon obtained the pelvic bone of a mun intermingled witb bones of the mas? todon and megatoux. Tho packet-ship Isaao Webb weut ashore off Sandy Hook on Tuesday night, and narrowly escaped destruc? tion. She was bound to this port from Liverpool, which sim left on the 13th September, with 351 emigraut passengers and a valuable cargo. The Captain, J. C. Stowell, was killed when directing the management o? the vessel during a severo storm which broke upon the vessel when at sea but a few days ago. Tho crew became demoralized, nud a terrible stuto of affairs ensued, tho vessel be? coming in momentary danger of de? struction. Ultimately, after working thirty days at tho pumps, dnring which time all on board wero put on short allowance, the ship carno in sight of tho Highlands, but went on shore near Sandy Hook in tho darkness of the night. Happily she wos taken off, and ber crew and passengers landed. Five passengers died during tho voyoge.-New York Times. ARHIVAII OF CAPUCHIN FATHKKS. Tho Gazelle, for this week, says: | "The Diocese of Charleston has been favored within tho past week by the arrival of two missionaries of tho Capuchin Order from Europa. These reverend gentlemen aro known by their religious names. Father Louis and Father Patrick. This is tho first mission that the Capuchin Fathers have ever accepted South of Mason and Dixon's line, and wo may esteem ourselves fortunato that they aro thus about to make their beginning in this diocese." Jasper Blackburn, tho editor of tho Homer (La.) Iliad, and a member of the present Congress, isssues an ad? vertising supplement from the office of a Democratic neighbor-the O?ni . borne Advocate-in which ho says bia office bas again been mobbed, and this timo entirely rained, so that be is only able, through the courtesy and assistance of bis neighbor, to publish the supplement to fulfill the contracts of his official obligation. CURIOUS.-Justas Maximilian wu? on the point of maintaining himself in Mexico, tho United States Govern? ment compassed his overthrow. Jost as Lopez has succeeded in mnking tho Brazilians wenry of war, tho United Stntes Government steps in to destroy the fruits of his victory. There was no opposition to tho Democratic ticket in Barnwell, aud tho following municipal officers were o'ected: Intendant- J. S. Brown, Wardens-I. M. Unison, J. J. In? gram, L. D. Hallonquist. VN Ul VALI.SD-Nothing tTiaUias ever been known or hoard ot* as a tonic adda so nindi to tho resistant power of thc human system, Under circumstances unfavorable to health, as HOSTETTER'8 STOMACH RITTERS. If you would i scape the inter? mittent fevers, lits of indigestion, bilious attacks and bowel-complaints, of which cold and damp aro the frequent cansos, use tho BITTERS uu a- PROTECT*VIS MEDICIS E. Thia is the wisest course; but, if already an iuvalid, try tho prepara? tion as a RESTORATIVE. In either case full reliance maybe placed upon ita effi? cacy. There is no mystery about tho causoa of its suecos?. It is tho only stomachic and alterative in which are combined tho grand requisites of a mild, puro and unvitiated vegetable stimulant, with tho UneBt selec? tion of tonic, anti-billions, anti-scorbutic, aperient and depurativo herbs, plants, roots and barks that havo over been inter? mixed in a modicinal preparation. Tho Bittors havo this distinctive quality, which is not shared, it is believed, by any tonic, tinctnro or extract in tho world: Il does not excito tho pulse, though it infuset a wonderful degree of vigor into tho ner? vous system, and strengthens and auat aim tho whole physical organization. California and Australia have emphati callv endorsed it as tho MINER'S MEDI CINE par excellence, and in Spanish Ame rica and all tho tropical climates, it ii considered tho only reliable, antidoto t< epidemic fevers. The already immense and still increas ing consumption of HOSTETTER'S 8TO MACH BITTERS, backed by many of th< most influential physicians throughou tho country, shonld convinco tho mos skeptical that it is worthy the confldonoi and approbation of all.
