The process of cheapening royalty
still goes on in Europe. King John,
of Saxony, ' realizing what a small |
figuro he will hereafter ont, since tho
absorption of all his contemporary
minor kingdoms by the Ogre Prussia,
and like a sensible man as he is, hav?
ing no taste for "tinseled realms," is
already negotiating, with the object
of resigning his crown and hereditary j
sovereign honora, which date from
1558. If this cheapening process
continues, we will soon find kings
and honors quoted in the Europcnn
price currents.
The Roman Catholic Synod, which
held its session in New York city
daring last week, had ander consider?
ation tho condition of the colored
race. The Archbishop is given the
power ' either to invite the colored
people, to attend tho Catholic Church?
es with the whites, or to erect for
their express use houses of worship.
The .establishment of schools and
orphan asylums in the Sooth was
also recommended. The same action
was taken in the Plenary Council,
held in Baltimore.
' A wealthy man in St. Louis paid
his taxes by a check of 810,000 on a
banking house. The collector did
not present the check the day it was
drawn, and the next day the bankers
failed. The collector has sued the
gentleman for his taxes, and the
courts have decided that a check is
not a legal tender for debt.
The "Grecian bend" has reached
Charleston.' The first young lady
seen with it was surrounded, in loss
than five minutes, by about seventeen
young men, each armed with a mus?
tard plaster in one hand and a bottlo
of Jamaica ginger in the other. They
thought she had the colic.
