' A gentleman, having realized n large fortune in the United States, returned to his friends in Zurich, Switzerland, having converted all his property into Government bonds, which having examined he left lying upon a table. A beautiful little girl, who was in the room, found some matches and unfortunately set fire to the pile of papers, which were total? ly consumed. This so exasperated the man, that he killed the child with a blow of his fist. RADICAL PATRIOTISM.-The St. Louis Democrat, contradicting the ru? mor that Orville Grant, brother of the General, is a Democrat, says that at a critical time in the late war, the said Orville, a tanner, went to his es? tablishment and told the men to leave their work and go into service! He, however, remained at home. Last week, at Northport Camp Meeting, R. I., one negro was stabbed so thnt his bowels protruded, another received 100 lashes, and yet another was maltreated within an inch of his life. The reason assigned for this furious onslaught, was that they were noisy and making a disturbance. D. W. HAWTHORNE, Broker and Commission Merchant, WALHALLA. S. C., and Honoa Path, 8. SCIENCE ADVANCES-VS SOON aa an article purporting to bo of utility haa been teated, and ita merits endoreed by public opinion, unprincipled parties endeavor to replenish their depleted purses by counterfeiting and substituting a spurious for tho genuino article. Somo time since, mercury, in tho disguiso of pilla, powders, Ac, waa given for all dis? eases of the stomach and liver, while qui? nine was freely administered for the chills. At length, HOSTETTER'S STO? MACH BITTERS made its advent, and an entire new system of healing was inaugu? rated. The beneficial efleet H of this valu? able preparation wero at once acknow? ledged, and mineral poisons Buffered to sink into that obscurity to which an en? lightened ago has consigned them. There have been many spurious Bitters palmed upon tho community, which, after trial, have been found perfectly worthless, whilo HOSTETTER'S ha* proved a bless? ing to thousands, who owo to it their restoration to health and strength. For many years, w? have watched tho steadv progress of HOSTETTER'S STO? MACH BITTERS in public Estimation, and its beneficent effects as a cure for all com? plaints arising fruin tho stomach, of a morbid nature, and we aro freo to say that it can be relied upon as a certain relief and remedy. Its proprietors bavo made tho above preparation, after yeal B of careful study add sitting, ami aro now reaping the rowsVd claimed by t\iie valua? ble sp?cifie, and which thc>* so richly merit. It is tah only preparation of tho kind that is rclmblo in all cas?s, and it therefore demands the attention of the afflicted. An excellent Paper for Country Reading. ITS POLITICS DEMOCRATIC TS THE GREAT FIGHT AGAINST RADICAL. USURPATION. TO THE PEOPLE OF TEE SOUTH. THE WEEKLY GLEANER-Devoted to the rehabilitation of the South in its former prosperity-is offered to subscribers at the low rato of $1.50 for six months. The annals of the American Republic show no political campaign comparable in tho magnitude of its issues and the mo? mentousness of its results to that for thc Presidency, now ponding. Indeed, tho very life of free government is on trial, and it will bo a Bad commentary on the capacity of the people for the exerciso of that high trust if they, tho jurors who aro to try the issue, pronounco a verdict of self-condemnation. If tho South has any hope it is in the success of the Democratic party in the coming Presidential election; and every citizen is vitally interested in tho progress of thc battle, and cannot afford to be without a sound and reliable newspaper. As an organ, not only of sound Demo? cratic principles, but as a vehicle of ge? neral nows, tho GLEANER is confidently commended to Southern support. A large eight-page paper, of forty-eight columna, filled with the contributions of able cor? respondents, the daily wealth of tele? graphic communication and readable edi? torials. Especially will it be valuable as an organ to disabuse tho Northern mind of the falsehoods in relation to Southern thought and actions, with which it is thc industrious vocation of certain parties to poison tho springs of Northern feeling on Southern subjects. In this view of tho matter, no more valuable aid to thc true reconstruction of thc country and restora? tion of juat sentime.it at the North toward the South can bo rendered than by sub? scribing to the WEEKLY GLEANER and sending it to acquaintances and friends in the Northern States. We ask the aid of such of our political comrades as shall eec this proepectun, in tho distribution of the paper; especially during tho progress of the impending campaign. t. The WEEKLY GLEANER is published every Wednesday morning, and mailed to singlo subscribers at $3.00 per ai.um; Six Months, $1.50; Three Months, 75c; Single Copies, 10c.
