oratio ate Convention assembled
to-day m large force, in Tucker Hall,
at 10 o'clock A. M. The Convention
was. called to order by Hon. Thos.
Bragg, and James Davis, Esq., of
Franklin, was chosen temporary
Chairman, and Messrs. Gales and
Engelhard, Secretaries. Mr. Davis,
on taking the Chair, addressed the
Convention in an appropriate speech.
A committee was appointed upon
permanent organization. In the ab
sehoe of the committee, Hon. Josiah
Turner, Jr., was loudly called for,
who responded in a seething speech.
The committee reported, recommend?
ing C?h R. H. Cowan, of Wilming?
ton, ; as permanent President, with
seven'vice-Presidents from tho seve?
ral Congressional Districts. Col.
Cowan addressed the Convention at
length, in on able speech. Over
seventy Counties of the State are
represented. Several hundred dele?
gates are in attendance. A Commit?
tee of Fifteen, on resolutions and the
nominations of electors for the State
at large, -was appointed. Judge Os?
born, of Mecklenburg, and James J.
Davis, Esq., of Franklin, were
appointed electors for the State at
large. Messrs. Robins, Graham,
Biggs, J. C. Dobbin, and others, ad?
dressed the Convention. The city is
full of visitors. Great harmony and
enthusiasm prevails. To-night a
great torch-light procession takes
placo, when many speeches will be
made;
NEW* OBIIBANS, Augast 13.-The
Senate to-day adopted a resolution
allowing the contestants of seats of
the Democratic sitting members, con?
firmed yesterday, por diem from the
commencement of the session to the.
date of the decision. The ground of
contest was ineligibility. One of the
contestants is himself ineligible, Jm
der the reconstruction laws, and the
other two are negroes.

ineligible-by 30 to 5. Bradley in?

body of Thad. Stevens is guarded by

of the visitors are negroes, The ex?
hibition attracts very little attention.
The body lies in the oentre of the
rotunda. No unusual decorations or
drapery in the capitol.
Mrs. Richards, of Alexandria, Va.,
died .to-day, from an over-dose of
chloroform, to relieve neuralgia.
