General Schofield constrnes the eight-hour law passed by the late Congress so as to allow him to re? duce the wages paid one-fifth, or to tho sum which would have been paid for eight honrs' work under the ten honr system. If this construction is to prevail in tho other departments of tue Government, it is doubtful if the employees wili desire to reduce the number of hours. Tho mistake of a druggist in Wa? terloo, Indiana, who gave a butcher a poisonous herb when he applied for sage-leaves with which to season some sausage meat, made eighty three persons violently ill. Tho prompt action of the physicians alone saved many of them from death. The Charlotte (N. C.) Times states that, on Saturday last, several men, who have been employed on the North Carolina Bailroad for several years, were turned off, for the avowed reason that they voted the conserva? tive tioket at the recent spring elec? tions. The Central Pacifio Railroad is now built to the Humboldt Uiver, 250 miles East of Sacramento. Consume?.-, of Gas WILL please attencUo tho PAYMENT OF THEIR BrLKi, for tho month of JULY. Tho beneficial effects of tt?iB valu? able preparation woro at once acknow? ledged, and mineral poisons; suffered to sink into that obscurity to which an on lightened age han consigned thom. There have been many spurious Rittors palmed upon the community, which, after trial, havo been found Perfectly worthless, while HOSTETTER'sYus proved a bless? ing to thousands, who owo io it their restoration to health and strength. For many yeats, wo Havo watched tho steady progress of HOS^CETTER'S STO? FISHER & LOWRANCE. COLUMBIA, S. C. THE WEEKLY GLEANER, A LABOE EIOHT-PAOE JOTJBNAL OF NB WS, POLITICS, LITERATURE. An excellent Paper for Country Beading. ITS POLITICS DEMOCRATIC IN THE OBEAT FIGHT AGAINST RADICAL USURPATION.. TO THE PEOPLE OF TEE BO UTIL THE WEEKLY GLEAJNEB-Devoted to thc rehabilitation of the South in its former prosperity-is offered to subscribers at the low rate of $1.50 for eix months. 1 The annals of tho American Republic Bhow no political campaign comparable in tho magi.:tude of its issues and tho mo? mentousness of its results to that for the Presidency, now pending. Indeed, the very Ufo of free government is on triar, , and it will bo a sad commentary on tho capacity of tho people for the exercise of that high trust if they, tho jurors who aro to try tho issue, pronounce a verdict of self-condemnation. If the South has any hope it is in the success of tho Democratic party in the coming Presidential election; and every citizen is vitally interested in tho progress of the battle, and cannot afford to be without a sound and reliable newspaper. As an organ, not only of sound Demo? cratic priacipleB, but as a vehicle of ge? neral news, tho GLEANER is confidently commended to Southern support. A largo eight-page paper, of forty-eight columns, filled with the contributions of able cor? respondente, tho daily wealth of tele? graphic communication and readable edi? torials. Especially will it be valuable as an organ to disabuse tho Northern mind of tho falsehoods in relation to Southern thought and actions, with which it is tho industrious vocation of certain parties to poison tho springs of Northern feeling on Southern enbjectn. In this view of the matter, no moro valuable aid to the true reconstruction of thc country and restora? tion of just sentiment at the North toward tho South can bo rendered than by sub? scribing to the WEEKLY GLEANER and sonding it to acquair.tarces and friends in the Northern States. Wo ask tho aid of such of our political comrades as shall eco thin prospectus, in the distribution of the paper; especially during the progress of tho impending campaign. ?. The WEEKLY GLEANER is published every Wednesday morning, and mailed to single subscribers at $8.00 per ai.um; Six Months, $1.50; Three Months, 75c; Bingle Copies, 10c.
