WO respect the man accord? ingly who, having a conscientious faith in the principle: that the negro is in every respect tho equal of the white1 tuan, puts- th? ?Olored indi? vidual forward on all occasions in the political foreground with his fairer complexioned fellow-citizen s. If the negro is entitled td vote, he is cer? tainly entitled to' hold public office. We maintain that he is entitled to neither; but gentlemen who main? tain the contrary are only consistent when they carry their theory into practice, and place Grasar and Scipio beside them in the L?gislature, in Congress, ko. ; they exhibit a duplici? ty of the moat ?y*-srd?r k?u? when they simply admit that they are ready to accept from Van American citizen of African descent" his ballot, but not his political association with them in that ballot's results. We believe some twelve or fifteen colored delegates have been elected to the Chicago Convention for the nomination of General Grant next Wednesday. Will they be admitted? And if not, why not? Sixty-one colored representatives have been chosen to the South Carolina House of Representatives. They, of course, will be permitted to occupy their seats, though the farce will be almost strong enough to excite the disgust of the sensible world. Still, however disgusting it may be to see such men in ouch places, it is but the legitimate sequence of the doctrine that the blacks are as good as the whites in the presence of man as well aa in the presence of God; and if this bringing of Republican institutions into pub? lic contempt and ridcule content the majority of tho American peOple, we can but submit to the odium and deplore the consequences. As long, though, as we know that a very large majority of our countrymen are op? posed to placing*the republic before the world in an attitude so revolting, we must he excused if we denounce, emphatically and continually, the effort pf a demonstrative few to force the nation into assuming it against its better judgment [New York Sunday Time?.
