HARTFORD, CONN., April 9.-Col? lected returns give English's majority at 1,735. .?^WASHINGTON, April 9.--In the House, there was no legislation. lu the Senate, tho.court was open? ed. Butler called other witnesses, among them Foster Blodgott, who testified regarding bis removal from the postmastership at Augusta. He knew rlothing beyond the fact that he bad .been suspended. Butler asked for a certificate that no reasons had be?n given for Blodgett's sus? pension. The defence made a point that Blodgett's case was outside of the charges made against the Presi? dent. At a quarter to 1 o'clock, Judge, Curtis commenced his argu? ment. M. H. Wood, of Alabama, who had been in the Union army, testified regarding Johnson's refusing him o (li ce, because he favored Congress. The defence opened. Mr. Curtis spoke until nearly '4-o'clock, when the court adjourned, without deci? sion. Curtis was listened to through? out with marked attention by the members of the court. Some of his points were startling. He left it with the Senators, whether they were acting in a legislative or judicial ca? pacity. Tho substauco of tho first, on which the eight charges were based, was that the removal of Stan? ton and the appointment of Thomas was, and was intended to be, a viola? tion of the Tenure of Office Act and the Constitution. He denied both propositions, and, among other au? thorities, quoted statements of mem? bers of the Conference Committee Sehenck and others. The reporter of the House used the words "term of service." It might as well be said that a king completed the term of his predecessor who died, as to say that Johnson was serving ont Lin? coln's term. Curtis proceeded, show? ing that the heads of departments were the voice and hands of the Pre? sident. He argued that the heads of departments did not-in fact, could not-constitutionally como under the tenure of office bill; that their excep? tion was well understood by Senators. Curtis, arguing the necessity of power claimed by the President, instanced Floyd's displacement by President Buchanan, where delay would have led to deplorable results. Arguing the President's duty to maintain the prerogative, ho said all would combat the unconstitutional law which worked injury to those whose rights he had in trust, and it was much more the President's duty to guard the trusts placed in his hands by all tho people. Recapitulating his argu? ments to prove that tho President could not be impeached for the act, he quoted Butler, to show that the managers admitted this view, who said tho removal in itself wus perhaps not an impeachable offence, if made with that motive und not accompa? nied with a defiant message to tho Sonato.
