The following culogium was pre? pared by a gentleman, who-though differing from tho Governor some? what in his opinions-believes that his political course hag beeu misun? derstood bj' the general public: JAMES IJ. ORR, GOVERNOR OF SOUTH CAROLINA. Martin Luther was persecuted by the Romanists for opinion sako, and yet his mamo is alive and cherished in the minda and memory of a Chris? tian people. His records have been registered upon the pages of immor? tal praise and admiration for his un? flinching faith, for what he conceived to bo the true doctrino of salvation for his fellow-man. Nebuchadnezzar, tho Babylonian King, to violate conscience, upplied the smelting process to Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that they might bo forced to adopt his peculiar creed. Upon their refusal, the King ordered them to be cast into the fiery furnace and that it bo heated "ono seven times hotter than usual." This odiet carried with it no fears for them. Their faith was planted un? alterably in tho Most High. They passed triumphantly through that ordeal in the presence of tho monster tyrant, which demonstrated to him that principles and truth were all powerful and must prevail. lu poli? tics, as well ns that of religiou, the test of persecution has been applied in every "age; and especially in revo? lution, inquisition follows; and often their host and purest statesmen und honest thinkers were sacrificed to the altar of prejudice and party power. No man born within tho breeze of a palmetto has been moro denounced in unmeasured terms than James L. Orr. Ho sees what they cannot see, spans what they cannot gnus p. Ho fathoms tho political waters and plants in his understanding tho ele? ments for tho country's future pros? perity. Not appreciated or under? stood, therefore, his motives aro impugned. Tho developments of timo will place him before his coun? try and tho world us a statesman of no common sagacity. Time will award to him duo credit in having achieved not only thu natural rights of the people of his nativo State, but in carving ont a policy predicated on principio, based upon patriotism, honesty and sincerity, that will re storo the equities that belong to our common country. Posterity will point to Janies L. Orr us the morn? ing and evening star of this Repub? lic. His record will stand in bold relief upon tho pages of historic fame. His name will bo printed in gold and his memory engraved upon tho hearts of a freo people Gene? rations yet unborn will recur to him as not only a statesman of wido and expanded views, hut tho political apostle of tho niueteeuth century. COLUMBIA. -.-???-> IL) who marries a widow will hare a doud man's head often thrown into his dish. M Aim LED WOMEN AND MAIDS AT DANOES.-Tho Imperial Review is troubled with the question whether married women should dance, and it expresses its opinion in ulong article, from which wo mnko au extract. It says: "There is somothiug almost un seemiugly in the spectacle of a half dozen young married women walking off with somo of tho beat partners in tho room, whilo a row of girls aro sitting neglected against tho wall. Neither ignorance nor thoughtless? ness can bo pleaded in excuse. Wo? men thoroughly know women, what? ever else they know; and there ia not one of thee? th at is not vividly con? scious of wh hi art-burning it causes a poor girl io Lear tho music nud watch tho many twinkling feet of a ball-room, and play tho most igno vninous part of a passivo spectator. Grown up women clutching all the toys or sweetmeats off a Christmas tree at a juvenile party, would not bo a moro unnatural spectacle. Grown men, eager to win the skates nt a round game got np for lads at homo for the holidays, would not bo moro cruel or inhuman. We are constrain? ed to plead for tenderness and con? sideration on tho part of young wo? men who aro married, toward young women who aro not. Might not Sidney's words, as ho banded tho draught of water to tho dying soldier, at L?tzen, bo profitably remember? ed? 'Thy need is greater than mine.' " TUE Fii.vo IN THE SOUTH.-Sergeant Bates, who has boen traveling through the Southern States, carryiugaUnited States flag, ns ho laid 't wager ho could do without molestation from tho Mississippi to Washington, seems to have nearly finished his task, hav? ing arrived safely at Haleigh, North Carolina. Instead of being assailed or even annoyed, tho old soldier has received marked demonstrations of respect, courtesy ami hospitality from the Southern people nil along tho lino of his pxtended march. It is not surprising, therefore, to find a radical journal endeavoring to injuro the military record of Sergeant Lutes | when in the United States army, and to represent that he was rather au indifferent soldier. But, if that wero true, it in no wiso diminishes the significance of tho fact that tho flag has traveled through tho whole South and been respected, though carried in tho hands of only one mau, ntfd, according to tho radicals, not much of a man at that. It will bo observed that the only assault upon the United Stute:* standard-bearer has come from a radical source, and that this has been reserved till all hopo was given up that somo disloyal Southron would assassinate tho Sergeant, in which event wo should havo heard of him only as ono of tho heroes of tho war, and a martyr at the shrino of patriot? ism.-Rull i more Sun. A report of tho conditiou of tho Russian serfs, nt tho beginning of 1808, has just been published. From this it appears that there aro still 3,620,3S2 serfs not emancipated. Tho number of tho emancipated serfs is now 6,140.635, including 1,168,110 in Lithuania. Of these, j only 518,520 havo obtained their j emancipation by voluntary agree? ments entered into with their mas tors. Tho remainder have become proprietors through the intervention of tho Government, which has ap? propriated some i>3UO,000,0()0 for the compensation ol tho old iauil-hoklers. ls CLOVER.-A prediction mado some time since to tho fact that tho rriucess Sulm-Salm would most like? ly reach a high social position in Europe seems to bo on the point of fulfillment. We note by late foreign advices that, on account of tho heroism displayed by her in Mexico in behalf of Maximilian, tho im? perial family of Austria havo taken j her under its protection, and placed ? a hands. >ffio coin potency at her dis ! poBul. Theao cannot bo cured without purifying tho blood. Now as to the remedy. Tuero ia no other blood purifier that will accom pliah Buch positive and extraordinary cures as Hcinitsn's Queen's Delight.
