THE SPRING FASHIONS-OPENING DAY IN NEW YORK."-Wo copy tho following from n late New York pa? per, for tho benefit of our lady read? ers, "who, whether they keep pace with the progressive movements, not to say extravagances, of the fashions or not, yet always like to bo posted .AS to the reigning styles and modes: m The "opening" yesterday was more li ko an "old-fashioned" one than any that have taken place for years, and well-known houses wore thronged from dawn to sun-set by nu eager crowd of seekers after the novelties in dress and fashion. The new bonnets are made princi? pally of tulle, crape, aud other tbiu materials. Straw is still' used, but altogether in fancy plaits and braids of Italian manufacture; the deeper color suiting better the higher tone which is allowed in street dress. There are a few plain, fine straws intended for^elderly ladies, but the straws generally are of fancy Tuscan manufacture, and mixed with silk or laoe. The trimmings are narrow rib? bon or lace barbes, the shade of the silk, and steel, or steel and gilt orna? ments, bandeaus, stars, butterflies and the like. Veils are nearly always now at? tached to ?io bonnets, and have scarf-ends that form second string, narrow ties during real duty under the chin. There are new round veils, however, of spotted lace, with ends which tie behind, and "mask" veils very small, to fit th? face, and mautilla veils, which full upon the shoulders, and are arranged with, an ornament upon the breast. Round hats are almost invariably trimmed with a scarf of lace and an aigrette. A peculiar and very be? coming effect is produced by massing very fine, self-colored flowers over the front, of white, blue, mauve and violet bonnets, and small green, frost? ed leaves over green bonnets. We recommend such styles as these, espe? cially for wear with handsome black uilk suits. Black laco and crinoline bonnets, on the contrary, are most stylishly worn with costumes of silk serge, no color beiug admissible with tho pecu? liar shades of olive, bottle green and brown, in which those aro im? ported. Ladies who have becu doubtful as to the permanency of the short dress may dismiss their fears and cut their now materials, as well as their old clothes, without a shadow of miscriv !2g. Tho olioii, dress has been re? ceived universally, is accepted uni? versally as a beneficent institution, worthy of tho good sense nod pro? gressive spirit of the nineteenth cen? tury. The most fashionable street cos? tumes uro made of black silk, or hitulnomo poplin, linette, and an ondleas variety of speckled mohairs, nlpaoas, mohair lustres, and the like. Handsome goods are trimmed with folds, and leaven, u.id other orna? ments of the samo, with satin pip ings and border of . fringe or ,lace; plainer materials With folds of Bilk, bias bands, braids, stitched on, or little pointed trimmings of. silk or satin, with a heading, .which this sea eon are made in all colors. The very latest and most deoided novelty in cootntre is a walking dress of rery rich pearl-gray poplin, made with paniers. The nnder-skirt is sim? ply a petticoat with a deep band of the poplin, but plaiu round the bot? tom. The upper skirt is straight at the back, ana nearly as deep ns the petticoat, but raised to forra tho paniers by a drawing-string which only extends to the side seams, and is covered by bows and sash ends of the material, bound with satin of the saino shade. The front breadths are out out in large vandykes, and the whole trimmed with fringes of the same color, beaded with folds and satin pipings. The paletot is con? fined by a sash at the side, and is shawl-shaped in front, crossing over the breast so that the two ends fall at opposite sides. This is trimmed with fringe with folds and pipings, aud u little pointed edging of the mate? rial bound with satin round the neck. The price of this snit was $250, but it could be made iu black silk very handsomely at from $125 to $200. All the new French cloaks are cut in to the form, and tied with a sash, or with a belt finished with rosette and endri. A favorite style for silk cloaks is the mantilla front and basque back, the latter cut out in large vandykes and bordered with black lace. The number of alien emigrants ar? rived at this port, as reported by the Commissioners of Emigration, up to April 1, this year, is 21,089-6,012 less than last year. . The applications for employ nient nt tholabor exchango during the past fortnight were 1,478, of which all but six was successful. [New York Times. Trotting Stallion Danville.
