THE BRITISH PREMIERSHIP.-Lord Derby, who has just resigned tho premiership of England, is in the sixty-ninth year of his age, by uo means what is considered in that land of .physical stamina and endurance an old man. He entered parliament, then Mr. Stanly, in 1821, and soon took rank among the ablest debaters of tho house. In 1827 ho took office as under secretary for tho colonies in Qeorge Canning's administration. When Lord Grey's reform cabinet was formed, in 1830, he was appoint- I ed under secretary for Ireland, with the additional honor of a seat in the cabinet. In 1832 and '33 Mr. Stanly greatly distinguished himself by his parliamentary oloqueuco* iu the dis? cussion of the reform bill, tho church temporalities bill and tho bill to establish national education in Ire? land. In 1833 ho was nominated Secretary of State for tho colonies, with the special object of carrying the abolition of slavery in tho West j Indies, which was effected under his auspices. In 1831, on the succession of his father to the earldom, he be? came known as Lord Stanly, and on the death of his father, in 1851, be? came Earl Derby. During the whig administration of Lord Melbourne ho . relinquished his whig associates and became a conservative leader, and upon the defeat of Lord Russell's militia biH, in 1852, was called by the Queen to construct a cabinet, which, after ten months' tenure-of-ofiico, was succeeded by the Abordoen cabi? net. This, in its turn, gave place to the Palmerston cabinet, on whoso re? signation Lord Derby was again called to the premiership, au offico which has on several other occasions been offered to him and declined. Lord Derby comes of tho old and heroic family of Stanly of Lfltica- j shire, upon whose representatives, in 1485, Henry VII conferred tho Earl- j dom of Derby for acts of prowess at j tho battle of Rosworth, and fer moro .than two centin ios tho euria of that line were sovereigns of tho Isle of j Man. Vast estates in England and : Ireland aro attached to tho earldom. It is announced that the Queen hus : called upon Mr. Disraeli, tho present ' Chancellor of tho Exchequer, to form a new cabinet. Tho j successor of the descendant of a long I line of nobles will be tho son of an English author, whoso ancestors re? moved to England in 1748, from Venice, whither their fore-fathers, of Hebrew race, had fled in the nf- 1 teenth century from the inquisition in Spain. The representative of this j humble and persecuted family, un- I aided by wealth and contending with tho prejudices against his Jewish origin, has become leader of tho House of Commons, one of tho ablest of modern deliberativo assemblies, minister of finance in tho greatest commercial empire of the world, aud ia now ottered tho premiership or virtuul sovereignty of the British realm.-Baltimore Sun. Since tho terrible earthquake at St. Thomas and other Gulf Islands, it has been discovered that tho Gulf stream has nearly doubled its veloci? ty, and tho phenomena is now at? tracting very geueral attention among scientific men. It was first discovered in the increased difficulty of navigation near tho Florida Keys, even steamers finding it difficult to I weather points easily passed previ? ously. Mrs. Phebe A. Hannaford wan ordained and installed as Pastor of tho Univer.salist Church and Society nt Hingham, on Wednesday, Febru? ary 19. This is tho first instance of the ordination of a woman in the history of the religious denominations of Massachusetts. An order has been issued by tho Mexican Government to extinguish tho national debt by auction sales of confiscated property, just as was done previous to the intervention. This is the cheapest way to obtain money. It is expected that 8100,000 can be paid oft' monthly. A vigilance committee at Cheyenne, on the lino of the Pucific Railroad, recently tied together three men guilty of theft, and affixed to thom a placard with these words: "Next case goes up a tree." ..? The report of tho directory of tho Tennessee penitentiary states that out of 702 convicts, there are G4I who have no education, and 700 who have no occcupation.
