A CHANOE IN AGRICLUTURE.-Tho
increased attention paid by ngricul- I
turista to dairy products aud to the
growth of fruits nnd vegetables for
the city markets, ia noticed in a re?
port of the United States Commis?
sioner of Agriculture. He shites that
the butter of New York in 1865, one
of several products of the dairy, was
estimated at $60,000,000; that the
supply of milk was also enormous,
and the manufacture of cheese in
that State had become a very im?
portant pursuit, there being not only
immense contributiou to the home
market, but the quantity exported in
1865 was 53,080,468 pounds, valued
at $11,684,927. It is even said that
the American cheese is supplanting the
British product in tho English mar?
keta. It is strange that more atten?
tion has not been paid by American
agriculturists to tho culture of fruits
and vegetables. The importance of
the great city markets has been, it is
true, moro and moro appreciated in
the Eastern and Middle States.
There can be no safer investment for
capital and industry thau the culti?
vation of vegetables and fruits for
the supply of tho lending towns and
cities of the Atlantic coast, which
aro growing with such steady aud
rapid progress t hat an increasing and
enormous demand may bo relied on
as among the most certain events of
the future.

Some laborers employed by Mr.
Vanderbilt applied to have their
time reduced to the eight-hour sys?
tem. The Commodore ordered their
time reduced to seven hours, and
paid them pro raia. One of tho
Irishmeu, who did not liko this turn
of affairs, said to his neighbor:
"Well, Mike, I wish the Commodore
was iu-." "Oh," said Pat, "be
dad, that wouldn't help you, for
he'd have thu coutrol of tho whole
place, inside of a week I"

gomery Mail says: "Within the past
few days a largo number of negro
employees have beeu discharged in
this oily, who, by voting for tho
negro Constitution directly arrayed
themselves against tho whites and
their business interests. Servad
them right. Tho negroes wero
warned of this in time."

emigrants, living upon tho charity of

a "rising" among tho negroes in

I whites, irrespective of politics, for
I the coming year.
More business was done in New
York city last year thau in Boston,
j Philadelphia, New Orleans, Chicago,
Baltimore, Cincinnati and St. Louis
together.
It is calculated that the sum ex?
pended for sleigh-riding in New York
at present amounts to over $100,000 j
per day.
The Register, a Republican paper
recently commenced in Richmond,
Vu., has suspended publication.
