C., has entered suit in the United States District Court, hero, against the Richmond und Fredericksburg Railroad, for requiring his wife to ride iu a second class car, when she had a first olass ticket, and lays the damages nt Si,800. The Enquirer will publish, on Monday, tho challenge sent by Col. White, a Republican member of the State Conventiou, to Gen. Butler, when tho latter was in tho city last week. It demands reparation for being ordered ont of Butler's depart? ment during the war. The affair is still pending. WASHINGTON, January 18.-The Senate's adjournment from Thursday to Monday discourages tho extrem? ists, and its apathy is denounced. It is almost certain that bills chang? ing the Supremo Court and degrad? ing Hancock will fail of two-thirds in the Senate. Senator Anthony's paper opposes the emasculation, and letters from soldiers in all parts of the country are pouriug in, protest? ing against the degradation. ' NEW OBLBAMS, January 18.-In the Convention, a- communication wus received from.Gen. Hancock, stating that ' having received information from Gen. Sheridan toth? effect that he had intended paying the Commis? sioners of Election and delegates to the Convention, Gen. Hancock had ordered their payment out of the re? construction fund. A communica? tion was also read from Gen. Han cook to the committee appointed to confer with him, relative to the col? lection of tho tax levied by the Con? vention. The General says, that by the ordinance levying the - tax, the Convention proscribed the mode of its collection; that the ordinance makes it the duty of the Auditor to direct the sheriffs nod tax-collector* to enforce paymeut; should any such persons bo forcibly resisted, the Ma jor-General Commanding will promptly use the military power to maintain the supremacy of the law. To this extent he has authority to act, but it is not his province in? terfere in tho matter in any other way. JACKSON, MISS., January 18.-In tho Convention, to-day, a resolution was introduced-and a copy trans? mitted to Senator Wade-approving of the re-instatemeut of Stanton. Resolutions were introduced relative to registered voters presenting certi? ficates and voting at any precinct within tho State, without regard to the point of registration; no enforce? ment of collection of debts contract? ed prior to January 1, 1861, until 1900; persous occupying lands to pay a tax for school purposes; ?forbidding tho payment by tho State of a?'y debt incurred in aid of thc rebellion, or claim from the United States com? pensation for slaves emancipated. An ordinance to invalidate all trans? actions of executors, administrators and guardiaus for widows aud or? phans, where Confederato securities were tho consideration, and granting the right to parties thus wronged, through introduction of courts of tho State, to enter upon and take posses? sion of all lands and tenements sold or disposed of as above, and the right of action at law against such persons, or their securities, for dam? ages. A resolution was adopted, to appoint a Committee of Three to me morializo Congress, that at least ono fourth of tho tax collected and being collected on cotton produced in tho year 1867, bc expended, through the Freedmen's Bureau, to feed thc hun? gry and clothe the naked, without regard to color. ATLANTA, January 18.-General Meade sent in a commuuication to tho Convention, this morning,wdiich, after acknowledging tho receipt of tho resolution asking for pay, he said: "I have this day received in? formation from tho Treasurer, that thero are no funds in the Treasury at Milledgevillo. I have also been rc contly informed, that some of thc public institutions of thc State have been suffering on account of the non? payment of the appropriations for their support. Whether this failure of payment has been on account of the want of means in tho State Trea? sury, or for other reasons, I am not at present advised. I shall uso my best efforts to secure, without delay, tho meaus of paying the incidental expenses of tho Convention, and at least a portion of the per diem and mileage of the members. If 1 hud, ou investigation, that any funds which should be in the State Trea? sury, have boon placed beyond my reach, I may deem it necessary to suspend temporarily the payment of a portion of tho current salaries of all officers who receive their pay either from the State Treasury, or the Stato Road. You will perceive from the facts above stated, that it is out of my power, at present, to com? ply with tho request of th?
