business speculations. Mr. Oliver
waa a stout, portly, jovial man, fond
of hunting and shooting, and, of late,
it "waa whispered, too much addicted
to racing and betting. Opposite to
him sat Captain Qongh, a tall, thin
man, of about thirty-five years of
age, with closely set eyes and sallow
complexion, wearing a large red
moustache and whiskers. He was
one of those talented personages
whp, -without introductions, and ap?
parently private fortune, contrive to
live comfortably, if not luxuriously.
He kept a gig and saddle hack, and
like tue libes of the field, neither
toiled nor spun for bis livelihood.
""Well, Oliver," said he, the "au?
tumn meeting next week will set you

"?eaven grant it moy," sighed his
companion; "but it is a frightful
risk. Betting -was all very well as a
recreation, but I don't like it, cap?

"Tight as wax," responded Oliver,
with a jolly laugh. "I hope you
don't want any?"
"I do, indeed! A lot of our Irish
butter dealers aro crying out for cash.

bought for two other parties in connection
with myself-one of them used it on cotton
and corn, and thinks it answered finely;
the other put it on cotton, on very poor
ground, and thinks it doubled his crop. I
used it on corn. It answered finely, and
was thought by tho hand that cultivated
the crop to be fully equal to Rhode's Super
Phosphate. I also used it on about au
acre of cotton, and I am clearly of opinion
that it is tho best and cheapest fertilizer
in use, and I expect to order several tons

with little or no effect to tho crop.
Where the Poudretto was used, it gave
us near half a halo moro per acre, and
caused the cotton to open much earlier;
and wo would, theroforo, recommend the
Bame as a concentrated manure for tho
growth of cotton, as well as improvement
