Allen, Greenville A correspondent of the San Fran? cisco Bulletin speaks of the terrible carnage of the late Tae-ping rebellion. One district is described which yield? ed 60,000 chests of tea per annnm before the war and is now a desert -waste. A belt of land 400 miles long by 200 miles wido is literally without an inhabitant. The writer says: The distinguished China traveler and savant, Dr. Maogowan, estimates the loss of life by the Tae-ping war at about 25,000,000 souls; but intelligent Chinese I have conversed with say that full 100,000,000 were killed or perished from starvation. There was not much to choose on either side. Whether Imperial or Tae-ping, the victorious party, batmen, women and children to the sword. The Grand Ganai used to be choked with dead bodies, and I have seen even the swift flowing Yangtze crimson with blood of all ages, sexes and conditions in life. _ ^ _ ^_ Botius GOLD MINE IN VERMONT. A gigantic swindle has recently been discovered in Bennington, Vt., in? volving, it is said, the amount of $350,000. A man, named Vander crook, in June, 1866, appeared in that place and offered for sale shares in a pretended gold mine near by. By judiciously imbedding a large amount of valuable specimens, which he afterwards disinterred in the pre? sence of a noted geologist and chemist, by whom they were analyzed, and found to be excessively rich, he suc? ceeded in forming a company and disposing of shares to a very large amount; after whioh he prudently decamped. AN EFFECTUAL CUBE FOR THE EAR ACHE.-Take a small piece of cotton batting or cotton wool, making a de? pression in the centre with the end of a finger, and fill it with as much ground pepper as will rest on a five cent piece, gather it into a ball and tie it up, dip the ball into a sweet oil and inBert it into tho ear, covering the latter with cotton wool, and use a bandage or oap to retain it in its place. Almost instant relief will be experienced, and the application is so gentle that an infant will not be injured by it, but experience relief ns well as adults. A watch, said to have been tho property of General Washington, whioh was "captured" by a Federal officer or soldier during the war, has recently passed into the hands of some honest people in Tennessee, who are taking steps to restore it to its right owners. It is of the pat? tern BO popular with our fore-fathers and styled by their irreverent de? scendants "bull's-eye." On the baok is neatly engraved tho initials "G. W." The quality of the gold is remarkably fine, and the case is worn thin by long usage. Au ingenious contrivance for rais? ing water is on exhibition in New York, and it is said supplies tho power to a flour mill in Virginia. The process is to iutroduco steam the exhaust of a non-condensinf; engine is sufficient-into a reservoir connected bv a pinn with a snpplv of water below, and then, by a je't of water, io condense tho steam, creating A vacuum which is instantly filled with water, to be discharged into a flumo or reservoir, from which it is carried to tho waler wheel. Among the patents granted last week was ono to a Jersoyman, for "improved composition for sausages." Wo have heard of a mixture of dog, red flannel and turnips, as a compo? sition for sausage, but it is not likely that it ever was patented. ^What the improvement may be, we are at a loss to imagine. The emigration from Ireland is not so large this year as last According to- tho returns of the Register-G en e ral, 51,150 persons left Ireland this I year, up to the 31st of July, being a deorease of 24,600 on the number to the date lost year. The entire ??iub?i o? emigrants sincojtuo period at which the enumeration com? menced, 1st May, 1865, to the 31st of July lost, amounted to 1,781,339 persons. They aro having a sparrows' con? cert every day now in New York at Union Park, and a correspondent writes that it takes place between half-past 3 and 5 in the afternoon. Five or six hundred sparrows engage in this concert, to the delight of hundreds of persons who ore at? tracted there to hear their sweet evening song. The editor of the Athens Watch? man, in publishing by request a "Union Republican ticket," for the Twenty-seventh District, composed of Clarke, "Walton and Newton Coun? ties, Ga., says there are not twenty seven white men in the district who I will own up to belonging to that j party. A negro woman was butchered by another in the most shocking manner on a plantation near Memphis, a few days ago. The murderess was jea? lous of her victim, and entering her cabin, struck her repeatedly with an axe, crushing her skull and face to a jelly. A dispute occurred recently at ? Cedar Keys, Florida, in which a Mr. Leak was kicked by his antagonist twice-once in his side, which re? sulted in his death. An inquest was held upon the body, and tho singular I verdict was rendered of ' 'Death by Providential causes." A number of minnie balls have been found in the walls of a building in Baltimore, near where young Elle rm ey cr waa shot by the Butler Guards.
