In view of the approaching elect ion in Georgia, Judge Davis, of that State, has written and published an address to the colored voters of bis district. His object appears to bo to influence the negroes not to push themselves forward as candidates Cor tho Con? vention, but to select "those in whom, from long association and knowledge of private character, they can confide; who, from education and experience, have a knowledge of legis? lation; -who have'no personal ends to gratify; who are friendly to the color? ed Tr.*", and arc sot willing tu do ali in their power' to raise and elevate them." Sp akingof thoso demagogues who hav3 taught, and would teach thom otherwise the Jndge says : "These men are ambitious of posi? tion, but having no personal influ? ence or merit to depend .upon in their race for. promotion, mast rely for success upon a combination made with a colored candidate. They com? mence by pouring their poisonous words into the ears of some promi? nent colored person, by exciting his pride and vanity to such an extent that he becomes satisfied that unless he is a member of the.Convention, to watch the artful movements of the whites, they will luke away the rights of the colored men, and reduce them to slavery again. By this process a political partnership is formed. Through flattery and falsehood, the ignorant freedman is made the tool and instrument of electing to a high rjsition a trickster. Against all such, now give you timely warning. Be not seducen into a bargain and sale of your best interests, for the honor of hoing the cat's-paw of such unprinci? pled men." This is the truth in a nut-shell, and applies to the colored voters through? out the whole South. As sincere friends of the colored population, who, in this vicinity, and throughout the State generally, have conducted themselues with suoh admirable pro? priety, we earnestly hope that they will not consent to be used as toole or cat's-paws of those who really have no interest in their future welfare, and only look to personal or political . ascendancy in the passing events of the day, and who, as soon as their ends are attained, will abandon them and their political and material wel? fare. The friends of the past, who were born and reared among and with them, should not be forsaken and abandoned by our colored peo? ple for theso scape-graces, who have no interest or feeling in common with them. . . < * ?,? THE MISSISSIPPI JUDIOIAKY.-Wo have already alluded to the resigna? tion of Judge Haudy, Chief Justice of Mississippi. We now learn from the papera of that State, that two more Judges, (Harris and Ellet,} are about to follow his example, and re? sign their places in tho Supreme Court. The whole of them, it ap? pears, not only resign their positions, but intend to expatriate themselves. Judge Haudy is to remove to Balti? more, and the two lutter intend re? moving to Memphis, where they will pursue thc practice of their profes? sion. How long will tho people of the United States-wo mean the moss of the people, as distinguished from thc party politicians-submit to theso y encroachments on their constitutional \ rights and liberties os a free peoplo ? Verily, tho work of reconstruction is progressing with a vengeance. No REPRESENTATION-No TAXES. It is stated that Hon. Jesse D. Bright announces that the Kentucky Legis? lature will considor the propriety of passing a law making it a ponai offence for any ono to attempt to col? lect a Federal tax within the limits of that State, until she is admitted to a representation on the floor of Con? gress. -? ti PBOFTTABT?E FAMUNO.-The profil of wheat-growing in the North-west appear from a singlo statement from a MUwaukee letter as follows: "Wheat can bo mado to pay a fair profit to tho farmer in all the North? western region at the rate of one dollar per bushel. It is now bringing in this market from $1.75 to $2. One farmer has employed fifty-two men the present season, with fifteen reapers. He sold his wheat at $1.90 a bushel, and has actually cleared nearly $40,001) on his year's crop.-" .-4* i?'? Tho German population of New York city is nearly 200,000. One little riot in the Sooth would undo what has been done. Let evorv editor make it a point to urge this in every issue. That the radicals will uso every means possible to draw you into a riot, yon may expect; but if the people will watch them, and head them on for one year or nine months more, tho victory will be complete. * I feel elated, and know tho Southern people will, and I am so fearful they may feel too jubilant and overdo tho matter." There is forco and truth in the above suggestion. Let our Southern people be cautious, prudent and watchful. ABSITTTANCR TO BAIL.-Tho follow? ing order has been issued by General Canby: .'Post Commanders may admit to bail persons not subject to tho Arti? cles pf "War, held in arrest by military authority, charged with offences not capital,- upon seourity, os provided in th e f ol 1 o w i ? g paragraph : . * "Security shall consist: 1st, of a cash deposit, of tho amount for which bond is required as bail by the State law in like cases; or, 2d, of a boud in like sum, running to the Post Com? mander, conditioned for compliance with all ordere, with surety, who must be a freeholder and must justify in twice the amount of the penalty, and must, under seal, authorize uny officer so ordered by tho Post Com? mander, in case of default, and non? payment by tho surety on demand, to summarily seize and sell sufficient of the property of principal and surety to satisfy tho forfoiture and costs; and immediately upon default made, tho bond shall constitute a lien upon the personal property of both prin? cipal and surety. "All bail and other bonds taken under military authority will conform to tho foregoing directions, when not otherwise specially provided." LABOE CARGOES.-The Savannah Republican notices that, on Saturday last, a British brig cleared for Liver? pool, with a cargo consisting of 598 bales of upland cotton, weighing 305,798 pounds, valued at $48,463.33, and seven bales of Sea Islands, weigh? ing 1,770 pounds, valued at $708; total weight 307,568 pounds, total value, 819,171.33. This is the first direct export of the staple this season to Liverpool by sail. Tho Wilmington Journal 6ays that the shipment by a British brig last week, of spirits turpentine made by her, was one of tho largest-it is thought tho largest-ever mado from this port, being 1,945 barrels. Tho valuo of tho shipment is estimated at between $46,000 and $47,000. JOHNSON AND STANTON.-As the case now stands between President Johnson and Mr. Stanton, the latter is only suspended as Secretary of War, and as a mere suspension in? volves a submission of the matter to Congress, the question recurs, how will tlie President present tho subject? Tho Tenure of Office bill was espe? cially designed for the protection of Stanton, and in whatever shape his case maj' come up, Stanton will doubt? less bo sustained by the two houses. And what then? Why, then we may look for a settlement between Presi? dent and Congress ono way or the other.-Keir York Herald. Tho Cincinnati Enquirer nominates George Tl. Pendleton as tho dioico of Ohio Democrats for tho Presidency in 1868. And as Mr. Campbell rightfully thinks that a fresh stock is essential to a new stand, he has filled his shelves, and, in fact, all the available space in Iiis store, with a prime stock of groceries and family supplies besides, a choice lot of that article to which Tom Moore was so addicted, and which he apologized for by the assertion, that "he poured the spirits down, to keep his spirits up." Drop in and inspect his stock. DEATH OE COU JOHN BAUSKETT. Wo arc pained to annonnce the death of Col. John Bauskett, one of our most respected citizens, and one of the brightest ornaments of the Bar in the State. We havo not the material for even a brief memoranda of tho deceased. He was born in Newberry District, and waa about seventy-four years of age. He was admitted to the bar, contemporary with Waddy Thompson, Hon. A. P. Butler, Judge Earle, Chancellor Harper and Judge C'Neall. In tho midst of this galaxy of South Carolina jurists, he shone bright. Colonel Bauskett represented Edgefield District, in the State Sen- j ate, for one or two terms. Since ho removed to Columbia, he took a high position in his profession; and as a friend and gentlemen, won esteem and respect of all who had the plea? sure of bis social intercourse. A friend has furnished us with the following additional particulars: Ho had nchioved reputation at the bar, before ho removed to Edgefield, which was about the year 182.". He became eminent at this latter plaoo, taking rank among her best lawyers. His practico was very largo and lucra? tivo; and I think it is conceded by all who knew him at this period-I mean the period of his residenco at Edgefield-that, perhaps, no ono at tho bar, exhibited a more zealous de? votion to tho interests of his clients, or argued his causes with a closer logic, or greater acuteness. But he enjoyed other honors and distinc? tions than those which properly be? long to his profession. He repre? sented the people of that Diatr>t. in both bruuohes of the Legislature, tin.s receiving from them tho most assured proofs of their respect and confidence. About fifteon years since, he removed to this place. His health was not good; he was stricken in years, and his practico at the bar, in his new home, was not extensive. Ho has been the picture of infirmity for many years, and it was plainly to bo seen that his days of usefulness and labor were gone forever.
