NEW YORK, September 4.-Tht Southern Famine Belief Co m mit ter held their final meeting to-day. The total cash receipts have been $250, 556, and has all been expended. The number of bushels of corn purchased is 175,816. The Persia hos arrived, with dates to the 25th ultimo. Just before starting, it was disco? vered that tho new cars bearing Queen Victoria from Carlisle were too wide tc pass throngh the bridge. The harvest is progressing satisfac? torily. The cholera is cpidemio in,Better dam and vicinity. It has also broken out in the Southern portion of thc Alps. The Spanish insurgents and the troops have had a fight at Castonia. All but thirty of the insurgents were cut ^to pieces. French officers, to whose border the insurgents fled, surrendered them. The sanitary report of the Island of Cuba, for the month of July, states that there have been 1,219 cases of yellow fever, of . which 226 resulted in death. AUGUSTA, September 4.-It is not true, as stated in the Northern pa? pers, that Gen. Pope suppressed the Albany News. It is also denied that private instructions have been issued forbidding freedmen running for the convention. MONTGOMERY, September 4.-Tho Conservative State Convention met to-day. Thirteen ont of sixty-two Counties are represented, and there is considerable enthusiasm. There are eighty-seven delegates, of whom t wonty-two are colored. BAI?EIGH, September 4.-The Re? publican State Convention assembled to-day; sixty-six Counties are repre? sented-several by proxy. The pro? ceedings were harmonious, and a permanent organization was effected. Gen. Joseph C. Abbot was elected President, and Gen. A. Dockery and Hon. Robert P. Dick are among the vice-Presidents. A committee to draw up a platform was selected. - A mass meeting was called for to-night. 7 P. M.-Tho Republicans held a mass meeting, at Tucker's Hall, to? night. A band of music was in at? tendance, and hymns and hozaunas wero sung. There were several co? lored speeches-all of which were extremely radical. A lobster was recently caught at Jonesport, Me., measuring three feet five inches in length and nineteen and a half iuches around the body, and weighing twenty-seven pounds.
