When the first news of this warlike

The crown worn. by the Austrian
Empress at her recent coronation as

Maria Theresa, but never worn by

Have just returnod from a tour through
tho s'dion made memorable hy "Sher?
man's march lo tho seaboard." Poverty,
suffer ng and destitution of the people can
scarcely be roali/cd-living in huts, rudely
constructed of charred boards, of rails,
boughs and mud, you are met by hollow
eyed, emaciated forms, whose first words
are "bread"-for something to stille the
cravings of hunger. In one place, I wit?
nessed the body <>f a child borne to its last
rest, on a beard, in the same rags in which
it died. Ii' another, four females existed
for a week on two pound* of corn, together
with some roots. On the road. I met an?
other who had walked twelve miles to beg
some food for her children. Many other
instances can bo given of sad suffering
