President, Chief Justice Chase and

it says that tho law is a dead lotter;
that tho blood of half a million of
brave mort bas been spilt in vain,
and tho country ia groaning under
the weight of three cr four thousand
militeras of debt-for nothing.
Tho article is ono of those charac?
teristic effusions which tho Herald
indulges in in ita frequent tantrums.
We are incliuod to think, from tho
bitterness w^h which it assails Chief
Justice Chase ?or thc rel?ase of Mr.
Davis, tliat there is some political end
in vi?w, and that tho objeot is to da
mago him as a candidate for tho Pre?
sidency with tho radical party. "Wo

seen by the subjoined paragraph that
tho Herald, not content with these
idlo charges, nrges the impeachment
of the Chief Justice. It says:

chief object of the proposed assem?

should not bo surprised, looking at
tho feeling of the country nt the
escapo of Davis, if it should be the
.impeachment of Mr. Chase. There
never was greater canse for impeach?
ing a high, public functionary. There

Journal, O'Conner, of tho New York
Times, and a representative of tho
National Intelligencer. Ono account of
tho banquet says:
"Mr. Greeley declined to partake
of thc supper, ns it was his custom
never to eat at that hour, but made
an appropriate response to thc toast,
'A re-nnited North nnd South.' Mr.
Greeley was observed to wear a black
slouch hat, and to a remark from thc
spokesman of the Richmond Times
that bo waa expected to appear in tho
renowned white hat, ho replied that
hj? had never owned but ono white
hat in his life. Tho Tribune philoso?
pher was quito easy and communica?
tive, and regaled those near him with
a number of jokes upon himself. Ho

the purpose of re-establishing good
feeling is such a meeting as this, than
tho motley crowds which Wilson,
Kelley and others draw together to
hear their bitter harangues!.. The
clever editors of both sections could,
if let alone, fix up thc business in a
hurry.
