Of the policy of the State of Vir? ginia upon the Congressional plau of reconstruction, and of the present interest it is exciting in that Com? monwealth, the VispatcTi says: When the veto is sent iu, and the Sherman hill is passed, the question of the policy of this State will be brought fully in front of us. There will be no disposition to retreat from or evade it. The Senate has already had it nuder consideration in secret session. The occasion for the hold? ing of this secret deliberation was the receipt of several telegraph messages from members of Congress, in reply to one sent to them by Gov. Pier? pont, propounding the question whc tlier, if Virginia now adopted tic con- j stitntional amendment, sin- would hu l relieved of the Sherman bill 'They were Messrs. Reverdy Johnson and Fessenden, of the Senate, ami Messrs. Spaulding and Bingham, of the House. All, save Mr. Bingham, re? plied by telegraph, and he wrote a letter. All, save Mr. Johnson, re? sponded in the negative. Mr. Spald? ing said it. was too late. Mr. John? son was in doubt, but thought the adoption of the amendment "would do a great deal of good.'" Mr. Bing? ham wrote a very earnest letter, urg- j ing the earliest action upon the Sher? man bill, the adoption of ali the ! constitutional amendments required | by it, and giving the most earnest as? surances that, when that was done, Virginia would bc welcomed back to the Union by the Congress and the Northern people, who were anxious to see her restored to lier place among the Stat.-. The Senate did not go into secret session for thc purpose of immediate, action, but merely to interdi) nge views in reference to the general wel? fare1, in the event of certain contin? gencies. Had Gov. Pierpont, how? ever, gotten a different answer, and one that was concurred in by the radical party, we need not say that the Legislature would have promptly adopted the amendment. The Washington Star gives an im? probable story, to tlio effect that tho secret meetings of the Virginia Se? nate culminated in the determination of an overwhelming majority of both I branches of the Legislature, now assembled at Richmond, to accept "tho situation'' fully, frankly, and with alacrity, and have a State- con? vention for the purpose of immediate organization under the Congressional bill. The election for members of this convention w,ould be held in May, the convention to assemble in June. After all, downright, plain comfort is what we are all after. There is a corner in every heart, where father and mother, brother and sister, re? side. Herc is our only home, much as v.-e may roam. There is a beauty in mystery, gratification in novelty but the mind will leave all, and go back to the old humble hearthstone, and there rest itself. Somebody, the editor .perhaps, is writing paragraphs in the Huntsville Advocate advocating the "Union as it is." The "Union as it was" would bo a moro sensible work. There ain't no "Union as it is." The "Sherman Abomination" wiped it out. The penal law, of Alabama, recent? ly enacted, which punishes horse stealing with death, has driven the thieves from that State. They ope? rate now in Mississippi, where the papers demand a similar law. It used to be charged that the rebels were trying to destroy the Union. They didn't quite do it. But what they left undone thc rad? ical Congress has just finished. Henry House, a freedman, has been sentenced by the City Court of Montgomery to twenty years im? prisonment in the penitentiary for the murder of his wife.
