A powerful array of argu? ment and strong logic would be found in the fae's which statistical ile naries would reveal in reference to this un? happy race-facts before which the liberators of the slave would turn pale as they contemplated thc accu? mulated misery of those whose "shackles" were, as they till us, off by the "avenging hand of j...e and humanity." .e are certain facts which have come .o our knowledge, about which it would be well for the world at large to be informed, if these facts have a general application to the whole Southern country. What we allude to is thc indisposition of the negro men to many, since they were subjected to tho operation of tho white man's law, which requires thc husband or parent to support his wife and children. These duties, previous lo the tune when freedom was thrust upon the slave, was per? formed by his master; uud Cuffee was not at first able to realize that either a moral, social or legal obligation vested lipon iiiiii lo support his family. Since the enforcement of the laws of civilization compels him to provide for his spouse and off spring, there is evidence in various portions of the country to .show that a much smaller proportion of negroes marry now than was the ease while they were in bondage. A compara? tive exhibit of the votaries of matri? mony among thc negroes now and while they were slaves would bc interesting. It would also be in? structive to know iiow many more commit crime now than formerly; how many more young negro chil? dren die now (and die early) than was the ease when the master and mistress took care of them? Ii statistical information on these and similar questions touching the pre? sent life and condition of the negro, as compared to his position os a slave, were supplied, we think those win glory over the "crowning achieve mont of the war"- would find little consolation hi their work. A CONTRAST. -In Maryland, iusteac of sending a negro who has le en con victed of a minor offence lo prison, he is sold into servitude for the lengtl of time he would have to servo ii prison. A sale has recently taker place in Maryland under this law, ?ind it has aroused all thc tender sym pat hies of those who would degradi and impoverish the white people o tlie South. This sympathy for tin negro lias resulted in the iutroduc tion in the House of Representatives by Mr. Kasson, of Iowa, of a Viii making it a felony to sentence or sel a negro into "shivery," and thc of fence is punishable by line up to $5, (100, or imprisonment up to ten years This bill was passed by thc House 01 the 8th instant. Now for a contrast. In Connccti cut, if a man or woman happens t be too poor to take care of himsel or herself, the State generally prc vides for taking care of this unfortn nate individual by selling him or lie to tlie lowest bidder, the Buccessft bidder being entitled to the. service of the person sold. The sale is mad for only one year, so that the poe unfoptunate is not allowed to eke or life under one master. The man c woman who becomes a pauper und? the poor laws of Connecticut, virtv ally becomes a slave the balance i his or her days. This is the fate i white people in Connecticut, au perhaps other New England an Northern States, yet thc compassio of men who have so much sympath to expend in behalf of negroes guilt of offences against the law, has neve been awakened to tho fate of whi men and women who are virtual sold into perpetual slavery.
