COLUMBIA. Wednesday Morning, Dec. 19, 1866. Thc Printing Again. Thc South Carolinian, of yesterday, publishes (to the exclusion of tele? grams and other news) two columns of puerile twaddle, on the would-be facetious order, purporting to bo a reply to our remarks, on Saturday, in relation to the State printi g; but, as usual, -with, its accustomed slippery adroitness, avoids the discussion of any point made in our statements, and shirks the true issue. Wc have only to state, that what was said in our former article was correct in c -'cry particular, and we flatly deny xhe repeated assertion, that application was made at the Phoenix office ior assistance, or that wc were in any way responsible for the dilatory man? ner in which the printing has "neon executed. So far as the amount of work is* concerned, it c:in be shown, by r.u examination of the printing of last year, that there was fully as much executed as at this session. Any one at all familiar with the State printing, knows that the work is hurd; but with the facilities now attainable, wc em? phatically declare ' that delays ure inexcusable. As to the the remainder of thc mat? ter in thc two-column bantling, hatched after three days' incubation, it is really not wo--th notice. The Phoenix office-the building, wc mean-seems to be a terrible eye-sore to the proprietor of the Carolinian. We pity thc man whom brick, mor? tar and granite can constantly excite to envy and jealousy. He had better put up a thick curtain-old newspa? pers will answer-in his window, and in his daily peregrinations avoid the route that takes him past thc PJioenix office. Ile may then have a little more quiet and peuce of mind. But as the proprietor of tho Caroli? nian has various modes of raising money, he may be able, ere long, to "run a muck" with the PJioenix in! the granite-front line. As there is no limit to radical pro? gress in the road to ruin, there is no reason why thc radical programme should be complete when the South? ern Stales are "resolved"' into terri? tories. Tho next stop is to revert them to a colonial condition, which leaves Great Britain to step in and claim what was was once her own, the vast and valuable stretch of coun? try which radicalism refuses to recog? nize as part of the Union. CONFEDERATE BONDS.-Advices re? ceived by the steamship Cuba, report that there "was some demand for 'Confederate bonds' in London on thc 30th of November, and prices im? proved to 6@6}*." It is stated semi-officially that Gen. Almonte hus received assurances by telegraph that Maximilian has aban? doned his intention of leaving Mexi? co, and of an avowed determination to put himself at the head of loyal Mexicans and fight for his crown. The dwelling of James Miller, at Kock Island, was destroyed by fire on Sunday. His mother, aged seven? ty years, and two sons, were burned to death, and another son was so bad? ly burned that he is not expected to live. A Washington despatch says a movement is being organized there to run Speaker Colfax as the Repub? lican candidate for President at tho next election, with Senator Howard as Vice-President. We regret to learn that the store of Messrs. Croswell A Co., at Ninety Six, was entirely destroyed by fire last Sunday morning; the work of an incendiary. Total loss $14,000; in? surance ??"1,000. The London Times of this morning contains a telegram from Berlin, which says the Pope of Rome has been officially invited to visit the United States. The Georgia Legislature adjourned sine die on the 14th inst. Tho Senate passed the Homestead Bill over the veto of the Governor. The House refused to do so. The New York Herald considers Greeley "a dead cock in the pit" so far as his election to the United States Senate is concerned. The Spanish journals reccommend the establishment of theincmistion in Spain as the sole means of saving so? ciety. Tho Legislature of Alabama ad? journed on Friday last, to meet again on the 15th of January next. A MANLY SPEECH.-In the House of Representatives, on Wednesday, Mr. Rogers, of New Jersey, said: Ho had never feared to state his position, and he would say now that ho deeply sympathized with the down? trodden people of tho South, that they were governed by a despotism, and that the conduct of the present Congress toward the South would it? self bc a sufficient cause for a rebellion. He protested and would always pro? test against all despotism every where. He protested against the despotism of this Congress, and he warned the people of the whole country that their liberties ware about being takeu away from thom by a set of crazy fa? natics. He was for general aniuesty at a!l events Tho whole object of the legislation of Congress seemed to be to puuish the South. He had yet to hear ut? tered in tho House, except by a few individuals? the first word of mag namity toward the South, the first principle of. Christianity cited in their behalf. The people of the South were a brave people. To be Sure, they had rebelled against the Govern? ment, but iu doing so they hud done only what thousands upon thousands of brave people had done before iu all ages of the world. Mr. Rogers drew a parallel between the condition of Ireland and that of j the South, quoting as applicable to the latter the pi litical uxioui that taxation without representation is tyranny, and said that the whole South was unrepresented in any way in Congress, except the single State of Tennessee, which, however, had not proper representation, and had not a republican form of government, but was governed by a despotism. ARREST or TOE NOTOKIOT-S SWAYZE. -Tlie Griffin Southern Herald, of thc 13th, contains the following par graph: "The notorious J. C. Swayze was arrested yesterday, at the instance of Mr. J. C. Briggs, ex-Fede? ral soldier, and former partner of Swayze, in the negro brokerage business, instituted since the war, at this place. The cause of the arrest, we learn, was, that this man Swayze had posessiou of money that belongs in part to Briggs, and which ho re? fuses to pay over, and to secure which Briggs had him arrested, and his property attached. Bonds were re? quired, but up to the time of writing had not been given, Swayze remain? ing in the custody of Sherill' Boyal." And this is the man at whose in? stance six of our citizens have been arrested, their homes invaded, fami? lies insulted, aud themselves impris? oned in Fort Pulaski! The Chicago Republican Company was called upon yesterday by a com? mittee of ladies of the Southern Or phau Relief Association, for a contri? bution to build a home for destitute children of deceased Confederate soldiers. We responded liberally, ? with a contribution of $500 iu Con I federate curreney. We hope the I people of Chicago generally, and ? without distinction of party, will dis i play a like liberality. Ata dinner party in Richmond, one. of the guests proposed as a toast "The Fallen Flag." It says: "Colonel Lee promptly placed his : hand upon his glass and arose. 'Gen 1 tlemen,' said he, 'this will not do. ! We are paroled prisoners. We have j now but one flag, and that is the flag j of our whole country-the glorious ' old stars and stripes. Gar>-ir,on, arrived at our ! lauding, on Wednesday last, from j Charleston. We learn it is the inten j tion of Mr. Browne, the owner of the steamers Vance and Volunteer, to establish a regular line of steamers between Camden and Charleston. We understand that this was an experi? ment trip, and it has been ascertain? ed that, with the removal of some obstructions, there will be no diffi? culty in navigating the river." A riot between whites and blacks i occurred in Portsmouth, Va., on I Thuysday night. Three white men I were dangerously wounded, and seve i ral others, as well as a number of I negroes,^!ightly. Early Friday morn I ing a fire broke out in the neighbor I hood of thc riot, and four buildings I were destroyed. Lieutenant-Governor Winchester, I of Connecticut, has gone to Europe to make a visit to the Swiss Govern? ment, for the purpose of closing a contract for furnishing their army with the Winchester rifle.
