AK INDIAN'S IDEA OF THE TEEH eBAPH.-An American officer once asked his interpreter to tell a Carnan ehe Indian about the magnetic tele? graph. The interpreter, -who was a Delaware Indian, asked him: "What von call that magnetic tele? graph?" "You have heard of New York and New Orleans?" said the officer. "Oh, yes," was the reply. ' 'Very well ; wo have a wire connect? ing these two cities, which aro about a thousand miles apart, and it would take a man thirty days te ride it upon a good horse. Now a mau stands at one end of this wire in New York, and by touching it a few times, ho inquires of his friend in New Orleans what he had for breakfast. His friend in New Orleans touches the other end of tho wire, and in ten minutes the auswer comes-'Ham and eggs.' Tell.him that, Beaver." His countenance assumed a mo< <, comical expression, but he made no remark, until the officer again asked him to repeat what ho had said to the Camanche, when he said: "No, Captain, I not tell him that, for I don't believe that myself." Upon the officer assuring him that such was the fact, and that he had seen it himself, he said : "Injun not very smart; sometimes ho big fool; but the holler pretty loud; you hear him half a mile.
