Negro character is illustrated by the following incident that occurred in our city a few days siuee. Some three years since a negro man named Harry, went off to the Yankees, leaving his wife, Maria. After tho expiration of some two years, not liaviug heard from Harry in all this time, and supposing that if not dead, ho had probably uarried again, she married a boy hythe name ol'Dick. Some two weeks since, Harry sent a kinsman of his from Pensacola to get his wife. This messenger goes to Dick and demands the wife of Harry. Dick refused to give her up without a consideration, alleging that lie had paid out for this woman some $300; but said, "if Harry will come] up like a gentleman, and pay me j $200, he may have his wife." The new synagogue, to be called the Temple Emmanuel, of which the corner-stone was laid Tuesday after? noon, at tho corner of Fifth Avenue and Forty-fifth street. New York, will have a frontage on Fifth Avenue of 101 feet, a depth of 184 feet, and the interior will measure 90 by 1G4 feet. The building is designed to accommodate uearly 2,000 persons. The cost of it will be between half a million and a million dollars. A poor little girl in the employ of tito Wisconsin Paper Company, iu picking over a lot of rags a few days ago* found, in an old knapsack, the sum of $1,050 in seven-thirty bonds and greenbacks. Of course, the child of want and labor was delighted with her good fortune. But upon discovery of the fact, the Company, with characteristic meanness, took it from her to appropriate to its own benefit. Sarah Donelson, of Red Bluff, Cali? fornia, is a plucky woman. She re? cently had a fight with fivo armed indians, knocked two clown, punched a third in the head, and then retreat? ing to her log hut, and used her rille against the whole until they beat a retreat, carrying off their wounded. She had her thumb shot off, but other? wise is as good as new, and now proposes to travel on her muscle. A London paper says that if the English do not abolish primogeni? ture, primogeniture will abolish its authors. Tho following cabio incident is ? related in the New York Evening \ j'ost, of Friday: "Last evening nt : G o'clock a telegraph despatch was sent over the cable from New York to London for the payment of a large sum of money. Nearly 2,000 Germans leave Europe every week, for tho United States, in tho Bremen and Hamburg mail steamers. A company is established at Copenhagan to encourage the emi? gration of Danes, Norwegians and Swedes to the United States. A. T. Stewart intends to establish an institution for industrious and reputable sewing and working girls of New York, where they can find a pleasant and comfortable home at a small cost. A silver tureen and salver and a haudsonio sum of money have been presented to James B. Angeli, Presi? dent of the University of Vermont, recently editor of tho Providence Journal, by his friends in Providence.
