She had been laboring under a depression of ?pirits lor some time, and hail frequently threat? ened to tako her own life. A gentleman of this edy, whose name is withheld, was married on Tuesday even? ing, and attempted to commit suicide the same night by cutting his throat with a razor. Iiis recovery is doubtful. BOSTON, October -I. - liosos B. Williams, sr., a member of the firm of J. 1). A M. Williams, wholesale liquor dealer.-, shot himself with a pistol at his residence in Brookline, and d;ed this morning. Catholic Council in liultlmore. BALTIMORE, October 7.-Thc second Na? tional or Plenary Council of Catholic Arch? bishops, Bishops, Ac, in the United States, was opened in the Cathedral, in this ciiy, this forenoon. It was one of tho most re? markable and imposing ceremonies ever witnessed in this country. The procession consisted of seven archbishops, thirty eight bishops,* three mitred abbots, forty nine mitred priests and 130 priests in full vestments. The procession was from Archbishop Spaulding's residence to the Cathedral, and was witnessed by at least 10,000 persons. Tho prelates were in full canonical dress, and tho procession was, therefore, imposing for its rich array of costumes. Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Pur? cell, of Cincinnati. Archbishop McClosky, of New York, preached an able sermon on the infallability of tho church. Mozart's twelfth mass was sung by the powerful choir of the church, accompanied by an orchestra of remarkable excellence. Thc music was, therefore, most brilliant. There were present in tho church bishops and priests from all parts of this country, and from Canada, France, Spain, Germany, Ireland, Bohemia and Hungary, besides 3.000 or 4,000 spectators in the Cathedral. Many thousands who could not get inside the building congregated on tho outside. IVcivs Items. NEW YOBK, October 9.-The morning pa? pers contain a list of passengers of the wrecked steamer ? Evening Star. There were 1G5 cabiu passengers, including 73 females. Beported among thc passengers, was a French troupe of sixty persons, who went on board immediately from the Havre steamer, without landing here. The vessel is valued at $100,000. No insurance. A letter from Port au Prince states that tho city was nearly destroyed by the explo? sion of the arsenal. Many vessels were burnt and lives lost. Tho fire consumed half of the business portion of thc city. Fifty buildings were destroyed. Loss ?250.000. ' The bark Voni, for Philadelphia from London, had on board fourteen of the officers and crew of tho wrecked ship Shooting Star, from Liverpool for East port. The brig Eliza Ann, of New York, for Boston, was sunk by collision with a schooner off Minot's Ledge on Sunday evening. The crow were saved. Thurlow Weed announces in tho Now York Times that he supports tho Demo? cratic nomination for Governor of New York; and he professes to act with tho Democratic party moro than with the radi? cals, from whose" ascendancy he fears the worst result for tho country". BALTISIOKE, October 9.-Randall, Attor? ney-General of the State of Mary'an 1, has published an elaborate opinion in opposi? tion to that of Reverdv Johnson and John H. B. Latrobe, maintaining that no citizen registered this year can voto at the muni? cipal election, next Wednesday. He says only those who were registered last year can ltgally vote. If this bo adhered to, 15,000 persons will be prevented from voting, and Chapman will bo elected Mayor. Much political excitement prevailed to-day and last night, and several fights occurred. Tho judges of election mot in the Court House, and resolved to adhere to the deci? sion of Attorney-General Randall, to re? ceive no votes of newly registered voters at the municipal election, and only allow those registered last year to vote. It is reported that Gov. Swann is remov? ing Police Commissioners for alleged official misconduct respecting the arrange? ments for the municipal election to-mor? row. WASHINGTON, October 9.-The President has appointed John Seys, of Ohio, Minister resident and Consul-General of the United States to the republic of Liberia, and Charles Seymour and Wm. Budd, of New Yrork, and E. Mudge, Commissioners to the Paris Exhibition. Secretary Seward was well enough to attend the Cabinet meeting to-day. Certain persons in Washington and else? where claim that they have peculiar facili? ties for obtaining pardons for Southern participants in the late civil war. This is an imposition on tho public, and numbers of persons have been victimized. It is asserted that they are merely impostors. Special despatches report that Berk's County has given 8,000 Democratic majori? ty, and Alloghany 7,000 Republican, Both reports need authenticity. A special to the Chronicle says Pendle? ton was beaten for Congress in Cincinnati, Ohio, by a large majority. PHILADELPHIA, October 9-Noon.- The election is progressing quietly, and evi? dently a large voto being polled. Both Earties are bringing out every voter possi le, and each profesa to be confident of success. Republican papers just issued assert that there are largo Republican gains. Tho re-election of Myers in the Second District is claimed. The Democrats have a largely increased majority in the First District in this cit v. The radical candidate for Congress will have 3,000 ma? jority. P. M.-Returns indicate the election of Randall, Democrat, in thc First District; O'Neill, Republican, and Lemuel Myers, Republican, in the Third; Kelly, Republi? can, and Taylor, Republican, in tho Fifth; Cr?.e, Republican, in Tenth District. The last two need confirmation. Returns from fourteen wards, about half of tho citv, show a Democratic gain of about 1,000.
