Public Meeting. ? ? large number of thc citizons of th* Indian Land, York District, met nt Bock Hill, on the 25th ultimo, to take into consideration the present embarrassed state of the country, and the subject of the enforced collection of debts. Mr. James M. Henkel was called to the chair, and H. H. Dren? nan appointed Secretary'. The object of the meeting having been explained, Capt. J. N. McElwee moved that a committee of twelve be appointed to draft resolutions ex? pressiv? of the views of the people in this vicinity in regard to the subject apove mentioned. The Chairman appointed thc fol? lowing named gentlemen to compose the committee, viz: Col. Cad. Jones, Capt, L. H. Massey, W. E. Waters, Capt. J. X. McElwee, Maj. J. M. Martin, Col. J. W. Bowen, J. H. Abernathy, Dr. S. Kell, Dr. R H. Hope, CoL L. P. Sadler, William Hanna, A. T. Black, Esq., and R. L Crook. The Committee, through their Chairman, Col. Cad. Jones, reported the following resolution, which was unanimously adopted : Resolved, That in the opinion of this meeting, the enforced collection "of debts, at this time, will be ruinous to the State, and we respectfully and earnestly call upon the Legislature tx) adopt some measure of relief. The meeting was then addressed by CoL Jones and Capt. J. N. McElwee, after which Capt. J. N. McElwee of? fered the following resolution, which was adopted: Resolved, That we desire that the creditors and debtors of the people regard the loss of our slave property as equal to a loss both to the creditor and debtor, and that all debtors shall Eay in proportion to the credit given im on his real estate and no more; and that time should be given to pay the amount due on the present pro? perty held by the debtors. Resolved, That the proceedings of - this meeting be published in the Yorkville Enquirer and Columbia Pkonix, and all papers friendly to the rights of the people. DIRECT ISTPORTATIOXS. -Wo find in looking over the Richmond Times the annexed paragraph : "The British brig W. H. Bigelow, from Liverpool direct, has arrived, consigned to Schaer, Keiner ic Co., with 133 crates and hogsheads of china and earthenware, to Butler & Son; 350 tons English coals, to S. C. Tardy A' Co. ; 7 bales of dry poods to W. B. Ferguson <fc Co., and sundries to order. This is hut. tho harbinger of other shipments from foreign ports which are soon to follow." Richmond has unquestionable fa? cilities for establishing direct trade on a magnificent scale, and could no doubt appropriate a large proportion of Southern trade; but there is one grave fault which her mercantile com? munity must correct. They lack energy and enterprise in an external sense, the particular and crying sin all Southern merchants have perpet? uated against themselves from time immemorial. It is toil and risk with? out remuneration t^ ?ugage in impor? tation and then conceal tho fact. In? stead of ventilating then business so thai? some one besides their own liOTscnolds will have an understand? ing of its extent, they shut them? selves in and refuse to be enriched. We know that people from North Carolina not only pass by Wilming? ton and Newborn, but Petersburg, Riehmond, Norfolk, and even Balti? more, without eve/ supposing that these cities offer inducements as wholesale markets. It is high-time ? for importers and other large dealers to manifest some wisdom. The chief hindrance to Southern mercantile success is, that those who adopt the life are unknown as well as the ex? tent of their supplies. [Raleigh Progress. The Astor House, ?a New York, rents for $95,000 per annum. TH? PARIS EXPOSITION.-The TaL ace of the Universal Exhibition* ir! more than half w-ry towards eomple- ? Tiie t-tagsof China, Japan, Mo? rocco, Egypt, Tunis, the United States, etc., mark the respective sites to be occupied by the countries thus indi oated. In the Egyptian section a fac-simile is being coustrdcted of the temple of PhHe, the finest of tire ruins at Thebes. This reproduction will be strictly exact, as all the parts of the temple have been moulded; and the polychrome architecture will likewise l>e imitated after the specimens dis covered in the interior of "the Py? ramids. Notwithstanding the ravages caused by the wer, Austria and Prussia aro to he brilliantly represented at the exhibition. As for the secondary States of Germany, which were origi? nally to exhibit under the black, rod ?nd yellow Federal flag, they are to be re-organized into two groups. One of these groups, comprising tho king? doms of Bavaria. Saxony and Wnr temburg, and the Duchies of Baden and Hesse-Diumstadt, is already con? stituted, sud has been officially recog? nized by the Imperial t 'ommissioners sitting in Paris. The bed of the rivor Seine is being deepened in front ol' the basin which is under construction to serve as a port of disembarkation in front of the Champ de Mars, on the Cjuai d'Or? say. Lu order not to interfere with the circulation of the foot passengers along the quay, au elegant bridge is to l>e placed across the little port. \ A Pr.AGUE.- -The plague of locusts in Algeria causes considerable uneasi? ness to the Government. The troops were recently called ont to act against this new species, of enemy, but the consequences of this massacre may lay the seeds of pestilence, inasmuch as the remains of such an agglomera? tion of dead insects have produced a nuisance of the worst nature. To convey an idea of the number of lo? custs daily destroyed, we are told that 3,000 cwt. is the average of the day's battle with this now foe. A railroad bridge is about to be constructed across the Ohio River, at Louisville, Ky., at a cost of about 81,500,000, which will be a great ad vantage to the inhabitants of that re? gion. It is computed that, in th* single item of freight between Louis? ville and New York, the gain to ship pers will be fully thirty-three pei cont. Tue bridge will be without ? draw, and so elevated that boats o any class can easily pass under v when the river is at its highest stage A CORN- CHOP. -The Harrisburg Telegraph says: It is estimated thal the com crop of Pennsylvania wil roach, this year, nearly 30,000,001 bushels; that the average yield pe acre will be in the neighborhood o thirty-three bushels, although, il some localities, as many as 100 bush els will be grown on a single acre There are several Counties in tin State where the average product wil be over fifty bushels per acre. The result of th?- strike among th deck hands employed on the North western Packet Company's boats, ol the Mississippi, has been disastrou to those concerned in it. The com pan y sent to Cincinnati and engage GOO negroes, whom they now employ paying them a less rate than the ol hands received. The white men ar indignant, and threaten the negroe with violence. The negroes, it is said do their work well. A Cincinnati paper, in speaking < the cholera in that city, says it is very remarkable coincidence that th caterpillars, which heretofore d? stroyed the trees and shrnbber during tho summer months, have n< made their appearance this year, an the same phenomenon occurred i 1810, when the cholera was so fatal.
