Tho meeting was the largest held of late years; and tho interest manifested by tho people excels any former demonstrations in favor of reform, since 1832. At each station persons were congregated to pay their respects, and ever,, where thc Presi? dent was received with manifestations of delight. At Annapolis Junction, Gov. Swann, of Maryland, welcomed bim to thc State, and accompanied thc party to Balti "uiore. On" their arrival in Baltimore, the excursionists were met by a committee of forty Citizens, with the'Mayor tut their chairman*, and escorted in open carriages to the President Street Depot for Philadel? phia. Largo crowds were gathered at thc railroad station in Baltimore, and on the? rine of thc procession, to get a view of thc excursionists, who were greeted by the waving of hands and handkerchiefs, and with deafening Cheers. At Wilmington, Delaware, as at other place- line of thu road, thc President was ?ted with hearty good feeling, and was r \ally re? ceived. After his brief rema, .,, by re? quest, the President appeared on the rear platform, when the surging crowd pressed forward and many shook his hand. The car and workshops, windows and balco? nies were crowded with spectators repeat? edly cheering, and occasionally a band of music playing, amidst extraordinary ex? citement.! ' President Johnson arrived safely at Philadelphia, and was welcomed by Col. Joseph Page, in behalf of the merchants and mechanics, irrespective of party, as the Chief Magj^rato of the republic-tho chosen protector of their rights and liber? ties. That, through him, the Union of all the States would be restored, and peace exist in fact as well as in name. The Pre? sident said ho knew how to-appreciate a reception from the people of Philadelphia. He trusted peace had come, and perma? nent peace, and that war had ceased for? ever. We had war euo"gb. All his efforts had been to restore peace and the perma? nent re-organization of tho Government. The President's remarks were greeted with great applause. Gen. Grant was also cheered. The Pre? sident was then escorted by tho military, under Gen. Meade, and civil bodies, mer? chants, Ac, to the Continental Hotel, where he subsequently addressed the vast crowd. He will be serenaded at ll o'clock, to-fiigbt. ' j Ff e-?v? Items. SAX FRANCISCO, August 27.- - A letter from Mexico states that a portion of the expedi? tion under John B. Urmy landed safely in Seoato, with 4,000 muskets and six pieces of artillery, and is now supposed to be with Corona. The town of Mariposa, California, wus destroyed by fire on the 25th. Only five or six buildings were saved. The estimated loss is $100,000. WASHINGTON, August 27.-Cornelius Wen? dell has been appointed Superintendent of Public Printing, vice John D. Defrees, re? moved. NEW YORK, August 27.-Dean Richmond died, yesterday, in this city. Rev. John Pierpont died suddenly, in Boston, last night, aged eighty-one. CINCINNATI, August 27.-Twenty-five deaths from cholera yesterday. NEW YOBK, August 28.-Only two cases of cholera were reported in tho city to-day. The official report shows there were 114 deaths from cholera in the city last week, lu Brooklyn, six cases were reported to? day, three of which were fatal. BOSTON, August 28.-Advice? from Hayti to August 5 have been received. A very destructive firo occurred at Cape HaytioB on the 26th of Ju Iv, the flittuage being ( -et i inated at about $700,000. - ? The insurgents bad advanced upon Cape Haytien, but were repulsed by the Govern? ment troops, under Ga?ere 1 Ment/.. At last accounts, they were in full retreat into San Domingo. The greatest number of deaths in one week took place in that ending on the llth inst., when 250 were recorded from this cause. During the week previous to that date, tho number was 239. Attorney-General Stanberry is pre? paring a decision in reference to the legality of the President's removing persons from public offices and ap? pointing others in their stead, without the advice and consent of the Senate. It will be ready in a day or so. The Charlottesville Chronicle learns that Gen.
