Professor Agassiz says the general
impression in regard to the Amazon*
river is very erroneous, not only in
regard to the climate of that rogion,
which, he had been informed was un?
healthy, but also as to its fertility.
He found the valley of the Amazon un?
commonly fertile, and its climate very
healthy. It is his opinion that it will
one day become the mart of tho
world, supporting, in comfort, 20,
000,000 inhabitants.
The Presbyterian Board of Foreign
Missions, according to the annual
report, employs 800missionaries, col?
porteurs and teachers; it ordained
twenty-two last year, and the church
membership, under its care, is about
1,200. Its receipts amounted to
^7,626; the expenditures to $510,
3?5-of which $40,000 is lost by the
bigh rates of exchange.
A man while digging a well on tho
